A recent study was conducted by the expert market research across tier 1 cities, to understand this shift in consumer behavior, understanding how people carry their shopping items when they go out and which type of carry bag do they use.

The primary aim of the survey was to understand consumer behavior when it comes to adopting sustainability habits as a part of their daily routine. A clear majority of 55.26% of the total respondents stated that while shopping they carry their personal cloth/paper bag for convenience. Whereas 18.42% of the consumers claimed that they use the plastic bag which is provided to them by the store they are shopping from. 14.47% of the consumers pay extra to use a reusable bag. Another 6.58% of consumers make it a habit to ask for a reusable bag, if not provided otherwise.

The survey finds that there is a clear indication of the growth in demand for reusable bags and plastic alternatives. Gen Z shoppers have started to move rapidly towards sustainable purchasing and are willing to pay more for such alternatives. For instance, the growing popularity of tote bags and thrifted clothes suggests that they are becoming a common choice for the eco-shoppers. This is also the result of Governments and municipalities introducing bans and restrictions on single use plastic.

Though there is a certain section of people who would still use the store provided plastic bag. This opens a gap in the market for the sellers to introduce cloth/paper bags and replace the plastic ones being currently offered to their buyers. Consumers are looking out for sustainable alternatives, which will also be light in their pockets. Reusable bags help to reduce this additional cost of buying a bag each time you shop. The study does a competitive analysis to look at consumer preferred brands and purchase analysis to understand how much an individual is willing to pay for the sustainable alternatives such as paper bags or cloth bags.

The expert market research study looks at how businesses working in the sustainability sector can devise targeted marketing and production plans to attract a large consumer base. As these trends will continue to evolve, reusable bags might become a staple in daily life completely ruling out single use plastic.
