Global Aeroderivative Gas Turbine Market to Grow at a CAGR of 4.2% During the Period 2024-2032, Driven by Applications in CHP

Global Aeroderivative Gas Turbine Market

According to a new report by EMR titled, ‘Global Aeroderivative Gas Turbine Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032’, the global aeroderivative gas turbine market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% during the period 2024-2032, led by uses in aviation.

With rising global demand for electricity, aeroderivative gas turbine CHP technology can provide a unique solution of dependable, ultra-high efficiency, flexible power that may also help decrease gas emissions. For example, LM2500, LM6000 and LMS100 technology offers a broad range of options in an economical manner. Aeroderivative gas turbines have gained wide acceptance in CHP applications, where they may deliver net plant efficiency of up to ninety percent – a percentage far higher than those offered by characteristic simple- or combined-cycle power plants. Such applications are expected to boost the global aeroderivative gas turbine market. North America, Europe and Asia are expected to be key markets.

Key Developments

In 2021, Baker Hughes secured a contract by Bechtel to provide high-efficiency gas turbines and centrifugal compressors to assist the expansion of the Pluto LNG onshore processing facility in Western Australia, operated by Woodside. The construction of Pluto LNG’s second train (“Pluto Train 2”) built upon Baker Hughes’ existing technology supply for Pluto LNG’s first train, which has been operational since 2012, and further expanded Baker Hughes’ global turbomachinery fleet in LNG operations. Baker Hughes’ scope of supply included six LM6000PF+ aeroderivative gas turbines and 14 centrifugal compressors for the main refrigerant train, and one gas turbine generator in addition to the existing Train 1 power system. The LM6000PF+ turbine was highly-efficient, cost-effective and flexible in operation, maximizing efficiency and helping to decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2017, Siemens offered 38-MW aeroderivative gas turbine; employing the combined expertise from its acquisitions of Dresser-Rand and Rolls-Royce Energy business, Siemens launched the latest evolution of its gas turbine portfolio – the SGT-A35 RB. The unit addressed the need for more economical solutions for the offshore oil and gas industry by enhancing the power density of the topside power generating equipment, thereby decreasing the needed space claim. The lightweight, aeroderivative gas turbine could produce up to 38 megawatts (MW) and was integrated into a compact, lightweight Dresser-Rand package, which was up to thirty percent smaller and lighter than Industrial RB211 predecessors.

In 2022, Mitsubishi Power Aero offered mobile, on-demand, aeroderivative power units to Life Cycle Power to strengthen Texas Electric Grid. Mitsubishi Power signed an agreement with Life Cycle Power (Houston, Texas) to supply five FT8® MOBILEPAC® gas turbine units, adding 155 megawatts of capability to LCP’s fleet.

In 2019, it was reported that IHI Corporation would introduce the originally designed aero-derivative gas turbine package named "Fast Power 40" and offer new energy solution models as part of its efforts to a sustainable CO2 free and recycling-oriented society.

In 2020, GE announced the opening of its new Perth Aeroderivative Services Level 2 facility and Tooling Store to give improved support to its GE LM6000, LM2500 and LMS100 aeroderivative gas turbine fleet installed in Australia. The facility would enable quicker and more flexible implementation of planned and unplanned maintenance, most of which would occur within the country, with a consequent decrease of the repair cycle time and logistics costs for Australian aeroderivative power plant operators.

In 2022, GE secured order for Six LM2500XPRESS gas turbine packages to boost grid stability in Taiwan. Taiwan Power Company (TPC) ordered six of GE’s advanced LM2500XPRESS power packages for its Tung Hsiao Power Plant Renewal Project to offer quick, reliable and flexible power. TPC’s 175-megawatt (MW) plant would help manage power shortages, stabilize the grid, and support renewables growth in Taiwan. GE’s compact LM2500XPRESS power package, built using GE’s proven LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbine technology, was 95% factory assembled into simplified modules for faster and easier site installation.

In 2017, Siemens added a new product to its gas turbine portfolio - SGT-A45 TR mobile unit.  With an electrical generating capacity of up to 44 megawatts, the aeroderivative gas turbine was packaged for quick deployment and could be installed in under two weeks. Its design featured outstanding power density, high fuel efficiency and excellent operational flexibility.
