The Commodity Compass Week 12-13, 2025

The "Commodity Compass Newsletter" for weeks 12-13 of 2025 provides an insightful review of commodity price movements. Key observations include fluctuations in food and beverage prices, such as a rise in palm oil prices followed by a decline due to weaker demand and export taxes in Indonesia. Similarly, soybean and maize prices faced pressure in week 13 from escalating trade tensions and increased production, while sugar prices rose due to tighter global supply. In metals and minerals, copper prices increased due to a supply-demand imbalance, while iron ore prices rose as China's construction sector boosted demand. Aluminium prices slightly declined due to increased production, and nickel prices decreased due to weak demand from China. Tin and zinc prices increased due to mining disruptions and long positions in the market, respectively, while lead prices fell as base metal markets weakened. In chemicals, ethylene prices showed a cautious decline due to reduced demand, while methanol prices rose slightly due to seasonal demand. Benzene prices decreased as refineries resumed operations in certain Chinese regions. Propylene prices also declined due to sufficient material supply. Other chemicals, including caustic soda and liquid soda ash, experienced price drops due to weak demand. Precious metals showed mixed movements: gold surged as investors sought safe-haven assets, while platinum and silver saw moderate changes. Energy prices saw volatility, with Brent crude oil prices rising due to decreased US inventories, while coal and natural gas prices declined.
