Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of seventeen metals, made up of the fifteen lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. Despite the name, they are reasonably common in the crust but rarely occur in concentrated deposits, which makes mining and separation costly. The group splits into light rare earths, such as neodymium and praseodymium, and the scarcer heavy rare earths, such as dysprosium and terbium.
From a market view, rare earth elements (REEs) matter because they sit at the heart of the energy transition and modern defence. Permanent magnets account for over 80 percent of rare earth demand by value, and the NdPr pair is the key magnet input. According to the US Geological Survey, China dominates both mining and the more critical separation and refining stage, which is why a policy move in Beijing ripples through the entire chain.
Because the supply of the rare earth elements (REEs) is so concentrated, rare earth prices respond to a short but powerful list of inputs: Chinese mining and export policy, magnet demand from electric vehicles and wind power, Western refining build-out, and the widening gap between Chinese and ex-China material.
Global rare earth elements (REEs) prices spent 2025 climbing in steps rather than in a smooth line. The NdPr oxide benchmark opened the year near USD 53/KG, with the market still working off the soft conditions of the prior cycle. Then the policy took over. Each of the tightening of the Chinese export rules pushed it on another leg higher, and restocking by anxious overseas buyers amplified the moves.
The global quarterly average rose from USD 53/KG in Q1 2025 to USD 82/KG by Q4, an advance of about 55 percent across the year. Q1 2026 pushed further to USD 98/KG as strong electric-vehicle data met thin available stock. The path was volatile, with a sharp surge late in the third quarter that took the benchmark to its highest in more than two years.
| Quarter | Price (USD/KG) | QoQ Change | Direction |
| Q1 2025 | 53 | - | - |
| Q2 2025 | 60 | +13.2% | up |
| Q3 2025 | 69 | +15.0% | up |
| Q4 2025 | 82 | +18.8% | up |
| Q1 2026 | 98 | +19.5% | up |
India was an emerging corner of this report rather than a price setter. The country holds sizeable monazite reserves and runs state-led mining and processing, yet domestic separation capacity is still small, so Indian buyers largely track imported oxide prices plus a modest premium for handling and logistics.
Indian NdPr oxide prices rose from USD 60/KG in Q1 2025 to USD 92/KG by Q4, then reached USD 112/KG in Q1 2026. The climb mirrored the global benchmark but sat above it, because India leans on imported separated material while it builds out its own magnet and refining ambitions under a national critical-minerals push.
Indian magnet makers and electronics assemblers spent the year managing rising input costs. With a national push to expand rare earth processing, buyers balanced near-term import reliance against the longer goal of local capacity.
| Quarter | Price (USD/KG) | QoQ Change | Direction |
| Q1 2025 | 60 | - | - |
| Q2 2025 | 68 | +13.3% | up |
| Q3 2025 | 78 | +14.7% | up |
| Q4 2025 | 92 | +17.9% | up |
| Q1 2026 | 112 | +21.7% | up |
Europe carried one of the steepest premiums in this report. The bloc has almost no domestic mining or separation, so it depends on imported oxide and magnets, and the China export controls hit European buyers especially hard. Delivered NdPr oxide traded well above the Chinese benchmark all year.
European prices climbed from USD 72/KG in Q1 2025 to USD 120/KG by Q4, then jumped to USD 150/KG in Q1 2026 as supply-security premiums widened sharply. For some heavy rare earths, European delivered prices reached several times the Chinese level, which squeezed the cost base of magnet-using industries across the automotive and wind sectors.
European policymakers responded by accelerating the Critical Raw Materials framework and backing new refining projects. None of that eased the immediate squeeze, so converters paid up for security of supply.
| Quarter | Price (USD/KG) | QoQ Change | Direction |
| Q1 2025 | 72 | - | - |
| Q2 2025 | 84 | +16.7% | up |
| Q3 2025 | 98 | +16.7% | up |
| Q4 2025 | 120 | +22.4% | up |
| Q1 2026 | 150 | +25.0% | up |
North America had the most policy-shaped year of the group. The region moved aggressively to rebuild a domestic supply chain, and a US price-floor agreement set a USD 110/KG reference for NdPr oxide, which effectively put a backstop under Western prices and pulled them above the Chinese benchmark.
North American delivered prices rose from USD 70/KG in Q1 2025 to USD 118/KG by Q4, then reached USD 148/KG in Q1 2026. The big structural milestone came late in 2025, when the first commercial neodymium-iron-boron magnets in over two decades shipped from a new facility in Texas, a signal that domestic capacity was finally moving from plan to product.
US buyers paid a clear premium for secure, locally processed material, and the price floor plus defence-driven demand kept that premium in place. The tension here was security versus cost, and security won.
| Quarter | Price (USD/KG) | QoQ Change | Direction |
| Q1 2025 | 70 | - | - |
| Q2 2025 | 82 | +17.1% | up |
| Q3 2025 | 95 | +15.9% | up |
| Q4 2025 | 118 | +24.2% | up |
| Q1 2026 | 148 | +25.4% | up |
South America sat between the emerging and premium camps. Brazil holds some of the largest rare earth elements (REEs) reserves outside Asia and has a growing heavy rare earth elements (REEs) operation, yet most separated oxide is still imported, so regional buyers paid a premium over the Chinese benchmark while local projects scaled up.
Regional NdPr oxide prices rose from USD 62/KG in Q1 2025 to USD 95/KG by Q4, then reached USD 115/KG in Q1 2026. Brazilian production growth offered a long-term cushion, but it was not yet large enough to break the region from the global pricing pull.
South American buyers watched the same China-driven moves as everyone else, with the added angle that Brazil is increasingly courted as an alternative supplier by Western governments. That interest sets up the region as a swing source over the next decade.
| Quarter | Price (USD/KG) | QoQ Change | Direction |
| Q1 2025 | 62 | - | - |
| Q2 2025 | 70 | +12.9% | up |
| Q3 2025 | 80 | +14.3% | up |
| Q4 2025 | 95 | +18.8% | up |
| Q1 2026 | 115 | +21.1% | up |
The rare earth elements (REEs) market forecast for 2026 is structurally firm, even allowing for the pullback seen early in the year. The supply side stays concentrated and policy-sensitive, while demand from electric vehicles, wind power, robotics, and data centres keeps building. The base case is a market that holds well above its 2025 starting point, with high volatility around any fresh policy news.
The bull case rests on tighter Chinese export enforcement, faster electric-vehicle and robotics demand, and slow Western capacity ramp keeping the ex-China premium wide. The bear case is a meaningful thaw in Chinese export policy, paired with quicker non-Chinese supply, which could pull the benchmark back toward the middle of the 2025 range.
Europe and North America sit at the firmer end because supply-security premiums and price-floor support are strongest there. India and South America trade above the benchmark while their domestic capacity scales. The global average range reflects how much swing sits inside Chinese export policy and restocking behaviour.
| Region | Price Range (USD/KG) |
| Global Average | 85 - 110 |
| India | 100 - 130 |
| Europe | 135 - 175 |
| North America | 130 - 170 |
| South America | 100 - 135 |
Rare earth elements (REEs) pricing is a market where policy moves the tape more than fundamentals on any given week, because supply is concentrated and demand is locked into long-cycle technologies. Here is what is worth watching, latest first.

Rare earth elements are seventeen metals essential to permanent magnets, which power electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defence systems. Their prices feed directly into clean-energy and high-tech manufacturing costs.
The NdPr oxide benchmark rose from USD 53/KG in Q1 to USD 82/KG by Q4, an advance of about 55 percent, driven mainly by Chinese export controls. Europe and North America paid the steepest premiums.
The global benchmark is expected to hold in the USD 85 to 110/KG range. The tone is structurally firm, supported by magnet demand even after an early-2026 pullback.
China leads both mining and the critical separation and refining stage, controlling the large majority of global processing. This concentration is the main reason prices are so policy-sensitive.
Chinese export and quota policy, supply concentration, magnet and electric-vehicle demand, ex-China supply-security premiums, Western policy support, and inventory restocking swings.
