Market Overview

The Xylene prices in Japan, the priciest of the five markets in this report, rose from near 1,005 USD/MT in Q1 2026 to about 1,145 USD/MT in Q2, a jump of just above 13.9% that mirrors what happened across the wider aromatics complex once the Middle East shipping disruption began squeezing availability. Globally, the average moved from close to 945 USD/MT to about 1,080 USD/MT over the same stretch, up around 14.3%. Some retracement looks likely for the second half. A global average near 1,010-1,090 USD/MT is a reasonable working range, assuming the shipping risk keeps easing. Xylene reaches the market through the catalytic reforming of naphtha, extracted from the C8 aromatic stream alongside ethylbenzene, with the para-xylene isomer accounting for most of the commercial value. Its fate is tied to one downstream chain above all others: the purified terephthalic acid feeding polyethylene terephthalate production, which absorbs the vast majority of global output for polyester fibre and PET packaging. What is left goes toward solvents in paints, printing inks, and a scattering of rubber and pharmaceutical uses. Because the PX-PTA-polyester economics dominate so completely, xylene tends to move in close step with naphtha costs and polyester run rates rather than anything unique to the molecule itself.

Xylene Price Forecast for 2026

The Xylene market should ease through H2 2026 as the Gulf shipping routes reopen and the freight and insurance premiums built into Q2 pricing start coming off. That said, the PTA and polyester run rates across Asia have stayed firm enough that a sharp correction is not the likeliest outcome, since producers running near capacity do not usually discount aggressively even once feedstock costs retreat. One should expect the retracement to play out over several months rather than all at once, especially given how tightly the H1 disruption squeezed available cargoes.

The Gulf is what is most worth watching here. A renewed shipping disruption or another naphtha spike would reopen the cost pressure seen in Q2 2026. Turn that around, though, and a quicker than expected normalisation of the Middle East cargo flows, paired with softer PTA restocking, would pull prices below the forecast range.

Region 2026 Price Range (USD/MT) Outlook
Global Average 1,010 - 1,090 Gradual easing from the Q2 peak, cushioned by firm PTA demand
China 980 - 1,060 Large integrated PX capacity keeps a floor under prices
South Korea 1,020 - 1,095 Integrated aromatics producers pass through easing feedstock costs
Japan 1,075 - 1,155 Higher energy costs keep this the priciest market even as shipping risk eases
India 1,065 - 1,150 Recovery lags as import-dependent buyers wait for Gulf flows to normalise
United States 970 - 1,045 Domestic feedstock advantage anchors the cheapest regional cost base

For the Quarter Ending June 2026

Xylene Prices Q2 2026:

  • China: USD 1,045/MT
  • South Korea: USD 1,090/MT
  • Japan: USD 1,145/MT
  • India: USD 1,135/MT
  • United States: USD 1,035/MT

Xylene Prices in China

Once the Middle East cargoes stopped arriving reliably, the Chinese buyers had to bid for alternative supply, and this pushed prices up about 14.2% in Q2 2026, to close to 1,045 USD/MT from near 915 USD/MT in Q1.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q2 2026 in China?

The buyers who normally counted on Middle East volumes had to bid for alternative supply once those cargoes stopped arriving reliably. That competition drove more of the increase than the naphtha costs alone would suggest.

Xylene Prices in South Korea

Close to 1,090 USD/MT is where the South Korean prices landed in Q2 2026, a climb of about 14.1% from near 955 USD/MT in Q1, broadly in line with the wider regional trend.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q2 2026 in South Korea?

The firmer naphtha raised costs at integrated complexes. The buyers across the region who wanted to avoid Gulf-linked supply increasingly turned to South Korean producers instead, and operating rates held high enough to meet the extra call on volume.

Xylene Prices in Japan

No market here ran higher than Japan's. The elevated energy costs compounded the naphtha increase felt across the region, pushing prices up just above 13.9% to close to 1,145 USD/MT in Q2 2026 from near 1,005 USD/MT in Q1.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q2 2026 in Japan?

Japan's energy cost structure, already higher than most competing producers, added an extra layer of pressure on top of the naphtha move seen everywhere else.

Xylene Prices in India

India moved further than anywhere else this quarter. The disrupted imports left buyers competing hard for whatever cargoes were available, and the prices jumped about 15.2% to close to 1,135 USD/MT from near 985 USD/MT in Q1.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q2 2026 in India?

A large share of India's contracted Middle East supply simply did not arrive on schedule, forcing buyers toward costlier Northeast Asian cargoes on short notice. There was no slack left anywhere in the chain to absorb the shock.

Xylene Prices in the United States

The US prices rose about 12.5% to close to 1,035 USD/MT in Q2 2026 from near 920 USD/MT in Q1, as rising naphtha costs and stronger export enquiries from Asian buyers lifted the market.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q2 2026 in the United States?

The firmer naphtha lifted the domestic floor, but the bigger swing factor was Asian demand: buyers avoiding the Gulf increasingly looked to US producers for replacement volumes.

For the Quarter Ending March 2026

Xylene Prices Q1 2026:

  • China: USD 915/MT
  • South Korea: USD 955/MT
  • Japan: USD 1,005/MT
  • India: USD 985/MT
  • United States: USD 920/MT

Xylene Prices in China

The integrated PX producers held their offers firm as the early Gulf shipping tension began working into naphtha costs, and the Chinese prices firmed about 5.8% to close to 915 USD/MT in Q1 2026 from near 865 USD/MT in Q4 2025.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q1 2026 in China?

The rising Gulf tensions from January onward lifted naphtha broadly. The integrated PX producers held their offers firm rather than compete for share into a rising market.

Xylene Prices in South Korea

The South Korean prices rose about 6.1% in Q1 2026, supported by firmer naphtha costs and steady regional export demand, to close to 955 USD/MT from near 900 USD/MT in Q4 2025.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q1 2026 in South Korea?

Firmer naphtha raised integrated production costs, while regional buyers kept steady rather than accelerating offtake. A fairly calm quarter, all things considered.

Xylene Prices in Japan

Near 1,005 USD/MT is where Japan settled in Q1 2026, a rise of about 6.3% from close to 945 USD/MT in Q4 2025 as firmer energy and naphtha costs lifted the market ahead of the sharper move to come.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q1 2026 in Japan?

Energy costs, already a structural disadvantage for Japanese producers, firmed further alongside naphtha, raising integrated production expenses.

Xylene Prices in India

India got an early jump on the Gulf story. The buyers secured forward cargoes ahead of an anticipated squeeze, and prices rose about 7.1% to close to 985 USD/MT in Q1 2026 from near 920 USD/MT in Q4 2025.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q1 2026 in India?

The buyers who read the early Gulf warning signs correctly began locking in supply before prices climbed further, a call that proved well timed once the sharper Q2 spike followed.

Xylene Prices in the United States

The US prices recovered about 5.1% to close to 920 USD/MT in Q1 2026 from near 875 USD/MT in Q4 2025, as firmer naphtha costs and steady polyester demand pulled the market back from its Q4 softness.

Why did the price of Xylene change in Q1 2026 in the United States?

There was no single dramatic trigger here, more a normalisation after a soft fourth quarter.

Quarterly Xylene Price Trends

The Xylene market firmed steadily through 2025 on recovering PTA and polyester demand, then accelerated sharply once the Middle East shipping disruption hit in 2026. The global average rose from near 830 USD/MT in Q2 2025 to about 890 USD/MT by Q4, then jumped to close to 945 USD/MT in Q1 2026 and about 1,080 USD/MT in Q2. As we can see, that is a gain of roughly 30.1% across the full window, one of the steeper moves among the aromatics tracked in this series.

Quarter Price (USD/MT) QoQ Change Direction
Q2 2026 1,080 +14.3% ↑ Rising
Q1 2026 945 +6.2% ↑ Rising
Q4 2025 890 +2.9% ↑ Rising
Q3 2025 865 +4.2% ↑ Rising

Q3 2026 In Progress - - In Progress

What was Xylene Price in 2025?

The year 2025 saw a steadier climb than the volatile first half of 2026 that followed. The global average opened near 800 USD/MT in Q1 and rose to about 890 USD/MT by Q4, a full-year gain of roughly 11.3% built on recovering polyester and PET demand and consistently tight integrated aromatic supply out of Northeast Asia.

Xylene Prices in China in 2025

It was the recovering PTA operating rates and stronger polyester fibre exports that carried the Chinese prices from near 780 USD/MT in Q1 2025 to about 865 USD/MT by Q4, up close to 10.9%.

Xylene Prices in South Korea in 2025

The South Korean prices climbed from near 810 USD/MT in Q1 2025 to about 900 USD/MT by Q4, up close to 11.1%, supported by tight integrated aromatic supply and firm regional export demand.

Xylene Prices in Japan in 2025

No market gained more over the year than Japan, up roughly 11.2% from near 850 USD/MT in Q1 2025 to about 945 USD/MT by Q4 as steady energy costs and firm export demand carried the market higher.

Xylene Prices in India in 2025

From near 830 USD/MT to about 920 USD/MT: that was India's year, an advance of roughly 10.8% as growing PTA and polyester capacity absorbed a rising share of import volumes.

Xylene Prices in the United States in 2025

The US prices firmed from near 795 USD/MT in Q1 2025 to about 875 USD/MT by Q4, up close to 10.1%, tracking steady naphtha costs and firm polyester sector demand through the year.

Key Questions Answered in the Report

It is mostly the purified terephthalic acid and polyethylene terephthalate production for polyester fibre and PET packaging that accounts for most demand. Solvent and rubber applications make up the rest.

The Q2 2026 average was close to 1,045 USD/MT in China, about 1,090 USD/MT in South Korea, near 1,145 USD/MT in Japan, roughly 1,135 USD/MT in India, and close to 1,035 USD/MT in the United States. The elevated energy costs keep Japan the priciest market.

The global average rose from about 890 USD/MT at the end of 2025 to near 945 USD/MT in Q1 2026, then to close to 1,080 USD/MT by Q2, a combined first-half gain of roughly 21.3%.

Early Gulf tension pushed naphtha costs higher, and buyers began securing forward cargoes on emerging supply concerns.

Somewhere near the 1,010-1,090 USD/MT range is a reasonable expectation, with a gradual easing likely as the Gulf shipping risk unwinds.

Japan sits highest on elevated energy costs, while the United States sits lowest on its domestic feedstock advantage. China, South Korea, and India fall in between, with India most exposed to import disruption.

Naphtha costs and PTA and polyester run rates drive most of the movement, with crude oil swings and geopolitical shipping risk able to amplify both quickly, as seen through 2026.

China holds the largest integrated capacity, alongside South Korea, Japan, and the United States, while India remains a significant net importer exposed to shifts in Gulf trade flows.

Quarterly trends help time PTA and polyester contract negotiations, while naphtha costs serve as an early floor signal for building forward coverage ahead of anticipated Gulf disruption.
