Africa’s cross border trucking sector is consolidating fast. Global forwarders are buying scale and planting offices along inland corridors, while the African Continental Free Trade Area steadily removes the tariff friction that once made regional haulage uneconomic. For carriers, the prize is obvious: intra-African freight demand could rise by roughly 28% before 2030, which by most estimates calls for around two million more trucks.
CEVA Logistics opened agencies in Conakry, Libreville and Pointe-Noire in May 2026, extending its inland corridor network. The company now serves 40 African countries with a direct presence in 23 of them across more than 60 locations.
DSV marked the go-live of its Schenker integration in South Africa in November 2025, onboarding every Schenker customer onto DSV systems. Site integrations followed in East London, with Gqeberha and Cape Town next in the roadmap.
DHL Group announced a multi-year investment above EUR 300 million in Sub-Saharan Africa in October 2025, spread across Express, Global Forwarding and Supply Chain. The programme explicitly supports AfCFTA goals and targets second cities emerging as demand centres.
DSV closed its EUR 14.3 billion purchase of Schenker from Deutsche Bahn on 30 April 2025, the largest deal in its history. The combined group turns over about EUR 41.6 billion with close to 160,000 staff across more than 90 countries.
Cross-border freight transport is the dominant Africa cross border road freight transport service, because roads move roughly 80% of goods and 90% of passengers across the continent. International transportation management and freight forwarding follows, growing as forwarders bundle customs brokerage with haulage. International warehousing and logistics is expanding around bonded facilities near border posts.
Digital freight exchanges are the fastest-growing Africa cross border road freight transport platform. Egypt’s Trella pioneered cross-border freight digitisation, and shippers now expect live tracking as standard. Tender platforms remain the workhorse for large contracts. Specialised and generic marketplaces serve mid-tier shippers, while crowd shipping stays a niche last-mile play.
Manufacturing and automotive is the dominant Africa cross border road freight transport end use, as manufacturers and agri-food processors are set to account for roughly half of intra-African flows in 2026, up from 46% a year earlier. Oil and gas, chemicals, agriculture, distributive trade and pharmaceutical cargo make up the balance.
South Africa is the dominant Africa cross border road freight transport region. Johannesburg anchors the Durban corridor and the routes into Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and the country’s 2025 budget set aside R402 billion for transport and logistics. DSV, Unitrans, Cargo Carriers and Super Group all operate from here.
Egypt is a significant Africa cross border road freight transport region, with EgyptAir’s home market drawing USD 409 million of logistics start-up investment between 2020 and 2025. Nigeria attracted the most at USD 676 million, and the 1,028 km Abidjan to Lagos corridor highway has drawn over USD 15 billion in commitments. Algeria is growing steadily.

South Africa is the dominant Africa cross border road freight transport market region.
Corridor density explains most of it. Johannesburg feeds the Durban port run and the long hauls into Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique, and the country hosts the continent’s deepest carrier bench, including DSV, Unitrans, Cargo Carriers, Value Logistics and Super Group. Government backing is real too: the 2025 budget earmarked R402 billion for transport and logistics. DSV’s Schenker integration went live nationally in November 2025.
Egypt and Nigeria are the largest secondary regions. Nigeria drew USD 676 million of logistics and transport start-up investment between 2020 and 2025, ahead of Egypt at USD 409 million and Algeria at USD 182 million, and the 1,028 km Abidjan to Lagos corridor highway has attracted more than USD 15 billion in commitments with construction slated from 2027. Sub-Saharan Africa led every world region for trade value growth in the first half of 2025, rising about 10% year on year.
The Africa cross border road freight transport market is fragmented at the bottom and concentrated at the top. Thousands of small hauliers work single corridors, while a short list of global forwarders and large regional groups controls the contract logistics and long-haul volume that shippers actually tender.
Competition turns on border clearance speed, corridor coverage and fleet reliability rather than price alone. The DSV and Schenker merger, plus CEVA’s steady pan-African build-out, have raised the bar on network reach. Local operators counter with corridor knowledge, SHEQ credentials and sub-contractor networks that global players cannot easily replicate.
Founded in 1976 and headquartered in Hedehusene, Denmark, DSV is a global transport and logistics group operating across road, air, sea and contract logistics. It completed its EUR 14.3 billion acquisition of Schenker in April 2025, and the combined business now turns over roughly EUR 41.6 billion. DSV’s South African integration went live in November 2025.
Unitrans is a South African supply chain and transport specialist and a subsidiary of KAP Limited. It runs one of the largest commercial vehicle fleets on the continent, covering bulk liquid tanker work, agriculture, mining and consumer goods haulage. Its Lucerne Transport unit moves chemicals, lubricants, gases, edible oils and fuel across Southern African borders.
Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Bonn, Germany, Deutsche Post AG trades as DHL Group and runs Express, Global Forwarding, Supply Chain and eCommerce divisions. In October 2025 it committed more than EUR 300 million to Sub-Saharan Africa, upgrading gateways, extending overland coverage into second cities, and backing AfCFTA-driven trade lanes.
Established in 1956 and based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Cargo Carriers is an integrated supply chain and transport logistics provider listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange since 1987. It has built specialist cross-border capability across Sub-Saharan Africa, moving steel, fuel, mining products, gases and bulk cargo through an accredited sub-contractor network.
Other key players include CEVA Logistics, Value Logistics Limited, APM Terminals BV, Bidvest Group Limited, Biddulphs International, DPD Laser Express Logistics (Pty) Ltd, and Super Group Ltd., among others.
