The global automated external defibrillator market size reached a value of USD 1567.4 million in 2022. The market is likely to grow at a rate of 8.8% in the forecast period of 2023-2031 to reach a market value of USD 3329.9 million by 2031. Increasing investments from market players and technological advancements are anticipated to be the market’s primary growth drivers.
Automated external defibrillator (AED) is a compact and life-saving device, intended to cure cardiac arrest patients. The consolidation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and early defibrillation helps in saving lives of cardiac arrest patients. Automated external defibrillator system consists of accessories, like pad electrodes and a battery, which play an essential role in detecting and interpreting an electrocardiogram and, hence, delivering an electric shock.
Automated external defibrillator is of two types- public access AEDs and professional use AEDs. Public access defibrillator is generally used by people who have minimal training. These public AEDs are commonly found in airports, schools, community buildings, hospitals, governmental buildings, and other public places for emergencies. Professional use defibrillator is used by skilled professionals like emergency medical technicians and paramedics, who have received additional improvised explosive device training.
AEDs are also classified based on the type of automation, that is, fully automated defibrillator and semi-automated defibrillator. Fully automatic defibrillator investigates the heart’s pulses and commands to deliver a defibrillation shock without the operator’s interference. Semi-automated defibrillator requires user intervention to provide a defibrillation shock by pressing a button in case of an abnormal heart rhythm.
Automated external defibrillator operation requires proper follow-up steps to deliver the correct treatment. These devices work on the ANALYSE and SHOCK mechanisms. As the device is being adhered to the patient’s chest, the rhythm analysis is initiated, which roughly lasts for 5-15 seconds, depending on the type of defibrillator. The presence of visual or auditory alarms indicate the presence of ventricular fibrillation. After that, a series of electric shocks are given to the patient depending on the ventricular fibrillation. Then reanalysis of the victim’s rhythm is done to provide a total of three shocks. After this operation, signs of circulation are checked, and chest compressions and ventilations are provided until the next minute.

The increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases, increasing number of key leaders, and advancements in AED technology are the key factors driving the development of the automated external defibrillator market. The contemporary defibrillator technologies have eliminated the need for separate pacemaker implantation in patients, and these advancements have positively impacted the market growth.
Another major factor contributing to the market expansion is the increase in the geriatric population, as the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases with age. According to World Health Organisation, 17.9 million people died from cardiovascular diseases in 2019 alone, accounting for 32% of deaths worldwide.

North America accounts for more than 60% of the global automated external defibrillator market share. This is because of the cumulative result of enhanced healthcare infrastructure and rising cardiovascular diseases. Significant expenditure by the Government of the United States has been significantly contributing to the growth of the market.
An automated external defibrillator raises the cardiac arrest survival rate by 70%. Reports suggest that the communities with AED training programs see a 40% increase in cardiac arrest survival rates. These positive results provide the pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies with a brighter global automated external defibrillator market outlook.
Artificial intelligence is also utilised in automated external defibrillator systems for better advancements, thus creating opportunities for investors in the global automated external defibrillator market.
Moreover, with the continuous efforts of scientists and the new advancements in technology, evolved ADEs are being manufactured enabling the best and most accurate treatment in minimal time. Various trials and tests are done to analyse and monitor the programming and operation of devices to avoid challenges and shortcomings in the future. Several ongoing clinical trials are also significantly contributing to the market growth.
