In downstream oil and gas operations, splitting up of various crude fractions is performed for the purpose of purification or commercialization. The separation process entails removing multiple liquids and gases from the hydrocarbon mix in separation units. Examples include gas-oil, fuel-gas, and water-gas separation. A coalescer is used for this purpose. A coalescer is employed in the oil and gas processing and petrochemical industries to carry out coalescence. Coalescence refers to the process of causing an agglomeration of liquid aerosols to create larger droplets (large enough) to be drained away gravitationally. A coalescer may be employed by itself, or as part of a larger separation unit. The two types of coalescers used in the industry are electrostatic coalescers and mechanical coalescers.
Coalescing filters are particularly devised to remove submicronic contamination from compressed air. A coalescing filter is used to separate vapours, liquids, soluble particles, or oil from some other fluid through a coalescing effect. The filter comprises multiple progressive layers which carry out specific functions (separating solid particles to liquid molecules from a gas flow). Common materials employed as coalescing filters include semi-permeable membranes and borosilicate microfibres. For natural gas, a coalescing filter separates water vapour and other particulates to enhance product purity. Coalescing filters are generally found in applications extending from paint spraying and food preparation to the production of paper materials.
Coalescing filters provide clean air for several applications. Such applications are expected to drive the global coalescing filter market. Applications of coalescing filters include compressor room/controls, medical/dental, food packaging/beverage bottling, microelectronics, plastic blow moulding, spray painting/powder coating, and packaging/printing. Other applications include spray paint equipment, pneumatic conveyors, gas separator systems, beverage dispensers, pneumatic power systems, laboratory and process gas usage, air gauging in manufacturing processes, air logic and control circuits, breathing air (fixed or portable systems), air bearings for mechanical power transmission, cooling and protecting sensitive instruments, and aeration in pharmaceutical and chemical processes.
