Dialysis is a treatment for people with failing kidneys; it is of two types - hemodialysis and peritoneal; both carry out normal kidney functions, filtering excess fluid and waste from the blood.
If chronic kidney disease (CKD) comes to end stage renal disease (ESRD), also called stage 5 CKD or kidney failure, the kidneys no longer function to clean and filter blood the way healthy kidneys do. In the absence of treatment, dangerous toxins and waste accumulate in the body. This is the point where dialysis treatment is required to prolong life till the time a kidney transplant is performed.
Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure pose greater risk for kidney failure, and eventually lead to need for kidney transplant or dialysis. Increasing cases of high blood pressure and diabetes are expected to drive the global dialysis market. Dialysis filters out extra fluid from the body and helps regulate blood pressure. Keeping blood pressure and blood sugar in control may help keep kidneys functioning longer.
In hemodialysis, a hemodialyzer is employed to filter out waste, extra chemicals and fluid from the blood. An access into the blood vessels is made by the doctor to ensure blood into the artificial kidney. At times, an access is created by linking an artery to a vein under the skin to fashion a fistula. If the blood vessels are not enough for a fistula, the doctor may employ a graft. A catheter may also be used create an access. Generally, a hemodialysis treatment takes nearly four hours and is administered three times per week.
In peritoneal dialysis, blood is cleaned inside the body. A catheter is placed inside the abdomen (through surgery) to create an access. During treatment, the peritoneal cavity is filled up with dialysate through the catheter. The blood remains in the veins and arteries lining the peritoneal cavity. Excess waste and fluid are drawn out into the dialysate. The two key types of peritoneal dialysis are Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD). CAPB is performed without the help of machines. APD is generally performed at home with the help of a special machine called a cycler.
In India, the occurrence of end-stage renal disease warranting transplantation is expected to be between 151 and 232 per million population. Key players in the Indian dialysis equipment market include B Braun, Fresenius, Baxter-Gambro, and Nipro, among others. Developments such as proposed introduction of a portable dialysis system (by Medtronic) that is readily transportable in rural areas, requires less water, relatively less technician expertise, and less treatment, are expected to boost the market in countries like India. Companies like Fresenius Kabi and DaVita are expected to help boost dialysis market growth by offering superior-quality dialysis and improved dialysis devices.
