News and Developments in the Market

In 2019, GE Power announced that the Birdsboro Power’s Birdsboro Power Plant had achieved the start of commercial operation using GE’s 7HA gas turbine technology. The 485-megawatt (MW) power plant situated in Berks County, Pennsylvania, employed one GE 7HA.02 heavy duty gas turbine and a D652 steam turbine in a single-shaft configuration.

In 2019, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW) and GE Power successfully began applying Total Plant Solution upgrades at the MEW’s 2,000 megawatts (MW) Sabiya West Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Station.

In 2023, it was reported that GE’s new 7HA.03 gas turbines could shortly be driven by hydrogen at Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) Dania Beach Clean Energy Centre, Florida, United States. This meant that the nearly 1,260MW facility was run by two gas turbines, which could in the near future employ hydrogen as fuel.

Kawasaki has advanced modern technology to continually enhance the Kawasaki gas turbine line up and its presence in the industrial gas turbine market. The technologies have achieved "Efficient Energy Use", "Eco-Friendly" and "Reliable Product Care for Total Life Cycle".

With an increase in 3-D printing, several companies are adopting 3-D printing in the manufacturing of gas turbines.

Increased Focus on Green Solutions a Prominent Trend in the Industrial Gas Turbine Market

Industrial gas turbine engines come in 1,000 to 50,000 horsepower, and may be employed in several applications, including driving compressors to pump natural gas through pipelines.  Gas turbines may also be used in oil refining processes like the Houdry process (a procedure which involves passing pressurised air over a catalyst to burn off built up carbon). Gas turbines are used in marine propulsion also and are used in several naval vessels.

Gas turbines enable electrification and heating of universities, hospitals, industrial sites and other establishments, and offer applications for compression gas compression/transmission, withdrawal/storage, generation of power, off-shore platforms and others.

Companies are increasingly focusing on sustainable solutions, and several nations across the world are looking to shift towards a hydrogen economy, marking a key trend for the industrial gas turbine market. Leading United States multinational GE is reported to have prepared a gas turbine capable of working on hydrogen instead of natural gas, or a fuel comprising of fifty per cent hydrogen. The novel technology developed by the company is expected to deliver working modern pre-mixer combustion systems with fuel flexibility. The company has been reported to have recorded more than 180,000 hours of running on a fuel comprising up to ninety-five per cent hydrogen by volume and running hundred per cent hydrogen-fuelled gas turbines.

The Gezer Industrial Gas Turbine Power Plant in Israel is a currently active 592MW oil fired power project; the project was developed in several stages. After construction was completed, the venture got commissioned in April 1999 and the Israel Electric owns the project. The gas turbine power plant runs on dual-fuel, with the primary fuel employed being diesel. If diesel is short, the plant can run on natural gas. Siemens was a turbine supplier for project; it supplied SGT5-2000E model gas turbines for the project.

Solar Turbines is a leading producer in the industrial gas turbine market. The company’s turbines are employed in generation of electric power, gas compression and pumping systems. It offers six families of gas turbine engines - Centaur®, Saturn®, Taurus™, Mercury™, Titan™ and Mars®. The turbines range from 1,590 to 30,000 horsepower, and can run on different types of fuel, such as distillates, natural gas, LNG, NGL, hydrogen, coal-seam methane, and renewable fuels, such as sewage and landfill gases.

Most Significant Uses of Gas Turbines in Aviation

The most significant end-users of the industrial gas turbine market are the field of aviation; gas turbines supply motive power for jet propulsion. In the domain of generation of electric power, gas turbines contend with steam turbines used in larger central power stations and with diesel engines set up in smaller plants.

Industrial gas turbine engines come in 1,000 to 50,000 horsepower, and may be employed in several applications, including driving compressors to pump natural gas through pipelines.  Gas turbines may also be used in oil refining processes like the Houdry process (a procedure which involves passing pressurized air over a catalyst to burn off built up carbon). Gas turbines are used in marine propulsion also and are used in several naval vessels.

Turbines are employed in processing, production, and pipeline transmission of natural gas and crude oil, and electricity and thermal energy generation for processing applications, including production of chemicals, drugs, and food items. The versatility of applications provides a great impetus to the industrial gas turbine market. Gas turbines are available in various forms to meet various power needs (from powering jets, tanks, and helicopters to power generation and industrial power applications).

It is expected that by 2040, the use of natural gas would be replaced in Vienna. In 2024, Wien Energie, RheinEnergie, Siemens Energy, and VERBUND are planning to combine hydrogen into the energy generation mix. It will be used as a component of the operational trial including a commercially employed F-class gas turbine in combined cycle operation. The project seeks to achieve significant insights into how combined heating and power plants could be transformed for use with alternative energy. Developing the turbine for operation with hydrogen was the first breakthrough in the venture.

Prominent features include a compacted, modular, and maintenance-friendly design.

Increasing Focus on Research to Develop Approaches to Clean Energy Challenges

In 2023, it was reported that GE received $4.2 million in federal funding towards the development of new gas turbine technology projects. The United States’ Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) OPEN 2021 program funded the project in order to encourage novel methods to clean energy challenges.

The two GE projects were ‘Lifted-flame combustion for high-hydrogen reheat gas turbines’ and ‘Manufacturing high-yield investment castings with minimal energy’. For the projects, GE would carry out front-line research for gas turbine decarbonisation in close association with organisations from the industry and educational establishments.

Increased Focus on Decarbonisation to Drive Industrial Gas Turbine Market Growth

There is growing acknowledgement of the importance of green hydrogen as an energy storage solution. As expectations of a hydrogen-powered future grow, companies like Mitsubishi Power have reformed their gas turbines to run on a mix of hydrogen and natural gas. While Mitsubishi Power’s turbines have the capability to use over 90 percent hydrogen, they run at 30 percent to encourage combustion technology that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions. Eventually, the turbines would run on 100% green hydrogen.

Modern Solutions Enabling Access to Clean Fuel and Focus on Scaling and Developing Infrastructure to Support the Market

Presently, solutions including clean hydrogen generated from natural gas employing carbon capture, utilisation, and sequestration (CCUS) technology enable companies like Mitsubishi Power to access clean fuel while the needed infrastructure for the future is developed and scaled.

In 2023, J-POWER USA’s Jackson Generation Project achieved commercial operation with the first Mitsubishi Power M501JAC gas turbines made in North America, furthering its presence in the industrial gas turbine market. The project supported Illinois’s commitment to renewable energy through flexible and efficient generation of gas to supplement solar and wind energy. The project also decreased the state’s dependence on coal-fired generation.

In 2023, Mitsubishi Power received a series of contracts from Taiwan Power for large-scale overhaul of four unit of gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant (Unit 3 to Unit 6), covering eight gas turbines. The project sought to decrease nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions while sustaining generating capacity, permitting the plant to adhere to increasingly rigid environmental regulations, and improve operating flexibility by enhancing operations and maintenance (O&M).
