With the growing global population, the demand for animal products such as meat, fish, milk, and eggs also rises. This necessitates animal health protection and growth support, improving animal immunity and productivity, and enhancing animal product quality. There has been a marked increase in the use of probiotics in the feed of farm animals including pigs, poultry, and ruminants, and in aquaculture and pet feeds. The demand for probiotics in animal feed is expected to increase during the forecast period. Europe, Asia and North America are expected to be key markets. The poultry farming sector is likely to be the driver of the probiotics in animal feed market.
Probiotics have been extensively researched due to their capacity to modify gut microbiota and immune systems in people and livestock, where they are used as prophylactic and therapeutic agents in clinical and veterinary settings. As a result, probiotics have emerged as a promising, safe, and viable alternative to antibiotics for improving farm animal performance. In dairy animals, adding probiotics to feed enhances growth performance and nutrient digestibility, lowers serum cholesterol, and reduces the incidence of diarrhoea.
Furthermore, probiotics have been shown to improve aerobic conditions in the gastrointestinal environment by depleting oxygen-scavenging molecules like nitrates. Probiotics have demonstrated the ability to release hydrolytic enzymes against bacterial toxins, as well as the capability to inactivate toxin receptors, restricting the spread of toxin-mediated illnesses in livestock animals. Animal feed is very important in livestock husbandry, and various experiments have been conducted to improve its potency using feed additives.
The European legislation banned in-feed antibiotics in 2006. Since then, the development of various health functional animal feeds and fermented food products using probiotics as additives has received significant attention.
Probiotics are live bacteria that, when given in sufficient amounts, provide health advantages to the host. Several Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Lactococcus, and Bifidobacterium species are popular probiotic agents. On a regulatory level, these helpful microbial agents are classed as zootechnical additives. Before being certified for a specific target species, a probiotic candidate must demonstrate at least one performance attribute. Modulation of the host's immune and certain physiological systems, attenuation of virulent markers on a variety of pathogens, treatment and prevention of infectious and inflammatory disease conditions, acting as a biocontrol agent in preventing spoilage, etc. are some of the required features of a candidate probiotic.
Several firms are engaged in R&D and production of probiotics for animals to enhance animal health and productivity. For example, Provita Protect claims to significantly reduce the incidence of calf scour; it is the only authorised and proven probiotic for calves on the UK and European market.
In 2017, Evonik launched an internally developed probiotic called GutCare in the USA, China, India, and Bangladesh. This product promotes the growth and health of broilers over the long term. GutCare is a direct-fed microbial solution based on a spore-forming Bacillus subtilis DSM 32315 strain with an inherent capacity to produce a variety of secondary metabolites.
Since acquiring the probiotics business of the Spanish company Norel in July 2016, Evonik has been promoting products like Ecobiol in Europe. Ecobiol, a probiotic, is a fast-growing bacteria strain called Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, which promotes a gut flora that maintains a balance between useful lactic acid bacteria and undesired potential pathogens such as Salmonella enteritidis.
