Ultrasound technology enables evaluation of pregnancy status and foetal viability early post-breeding and identification of animals that fail to conceive, thereby enhancing reproductive efficiency; early recognition of animals having twin foetuses, permitting the application of differential management strategies to evade the negative consequences of twinning on the mother animal’s general health also during birthing; and visualisation of ovarian and uterine pathologies not exactly identified via rectal palpation, permitting the implementation of suitable therapies.  Ultrasonography can also help determine foetal sex in utero. Ultrasound-guided interventional techniques may be employed for diagnostic as well as therapeutic purposes. For example, ultrasonography is a widely available diagnostic modality for the identification of dogs with suspected ureteral ectopia.

In abdominal scanning, different abdominal organs may be scanned through sonography, such as hepatobiliary, spleen, gastro- intestinal tract, calculi in kidney and urinary bladder, hydronephrosis, bladder tumour, renal cortex and medulla.

In animal reproduction, ultrasonography has been used widely to observe ovarian follicular dynamics, pregnancy diagnosis, fetal wellbeing including fetal sexing, ovum pick-up technology (OPU) and to detect reproductive diseases.

In cardiac ultrasonography/echocardiography, ultrasound is employed to image the heart; it enables the practitioner to view detailed heart-structures, including chamber size, heart function, the valves of the heart, and the pericardium.

In limb ultrasonography, ultrasound enables the examination of tendons and ligaments of forelimbs and hind limbs; the procedure is extensively employed to certify the fitness of racehorses.

Ultrasound-guided biopsy is carried out on abdominal organs like liver, spleen, kidney, prostrate, abdominal mass, lesions etc.

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound provides detailed 3-dimensional images of the baby, and helps in the identification of conditions such as a cleft lip that may not be recognized in a two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound. The 3D ultrasound allows for several types of manipulation, such as rotation and zooming, which permits better examination of ultrasonographic images. In four-dimensional (4D) ultrasonography, real-time element is included. This allows viewing of real-time motion.
