Market Overview

China remained the dearest market we track through the first half of the year 2026 (H1 2026), with Q2 closing at a value of USD 1.310/KG against Q1's USD 1.290/KG, up by 1.6%. Two factors drove this together: the holiday lull came to an end, MTBE and alkylation buyers returned, and the refinery C4 stream costs edged up at the same time. That combination actually reversed the sharp Q3 and Q4 of 2025 slide, when the surplus material had dragged the prices down across the board. The global average moved less, from a value of USD 0.804/KG to USD 0.815/KG, a gain of just 1.4 percent. For the second half of 2026 (H2 2026), a range of USD 0.81 to 0.87/KG looks to be likely worldwide, supported by the picking-up petrochemical alkylation offtake and the dependable refrigerant-grade buying.

Isobutane, which carries the chemical formula C4H10, is the branched isomer of normal butane, a relatively simple molecule at its core. Refiners pull it out from the natural gas liquids during the gas processing stage, or produce it in-house by isomerising n-butane over a catalyst. There are three grades that trade: the chemical grade for alkylation and isobutylene synthesis, the refrigerant grade (known as R-600a, used in domestic fridges and commercial cooling), and the aerosol-propellant grade for personal care and household sprays. Petrochemical use dwarfs everything else by a wide margin, with isobutane being dehydrogenated to isobutylene for use in MTBE, butyl rubber, and polyisobutylene, plus a separate stream feeding into alkylation units that lift the gasoline octane. Everything beyond that is fairly minor: low-GWP refrigerant equipment, aerosol propellants, and a bit of straight LPG blending. There are three main factors that set the price: the natural gas liquids and naphtha feedstock costs, how hard the alkylation units are running, and how fast the refrigerant trade keeps switching over to it.

Isobutane Price Forecast for 2026

The second half of the year 2026 opened on a solid footing overall, though not evenly across every region. China was the exception, as the ample inventories weighed on the prices there even while the exports into South and Southeast Asia slowly worked off the surplus. Elsewhere, the market stayed calmer, with the alkylation feedstock and isobutylene-derivative buyers, both the refiners and the petrochemical users, continuing to order without much disruption. Feedstock costs helped too, with the natural gas liquids being firmer in the US and the naphtha-linked costs across Asia and Europe putting a floor under the prices as the half progressed.

Region 2026 Price Range (USD/KG) Outlook
Global Average 0.81 - 0.87 Alkylation demand and NGL cost support
United States 0.44 - 0.48 NGL cost advantage keeps firm buying
China 1.25 - 1.40 Oversupply easing gradually on export flows
Germany 0.51 - 0.57 Energy and naphtha costs maintain premium
India 0.46 - 0.51 Import-linked demand supports firm middle

  • China: USD 1.310/KG
  • Germany: USD 0.523/KG
  • India: USD 0.477/KG

Isobutane Prices in the United States

The alkylation units ran harder through Q2, the natural gas liquids firmed alongside, and the US Isobutane clawed back its Q1 seasonal softness. The gain came to a value of 1.1%, from USD 0.446/KG to USD 0.451/KG.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q2 2026 in the United States?

  • Refinery alkylation units operated at higher rates.
  • Firmer natural gas liquids squeezed production economics.
  • Refrigerant and aerosol-propellant offtake held steady. Quarter closed at USD 0.451/KG.

Isobutane Prices in China

China stayed the priciest market at a value of USD 1.310/KG, up by 1.6% on Q1's USD 1.290/KG. The MTBE and alkylation buyers returned and the naphtha-linked feedstock firmed, though neither of the factors moved the needle by much.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q2 2026 in China?

  • MTBE and butyl rubber buyers returned to the domestic market.
  • Both naphtha and crude firmed, lifting break-even levels.
  • Heavy domestic stocks pulled the other way, capping the rebound, so the recovery stayed shallow even as export flows picked up.

Isobutane Prices in Germany

Germany barely budged, up by 0.8% to a value of USD 0.523/KG, as the flat alkylation and isobutylene-derivative demand combined with the firmer energy costs to hold the market there.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q2 2026 in Germany?

  • European alkylation and specialty butyl rubber buying stayed steady, order books level.
  • Firm energy and naphtha costs anchored the quarter at USD 0.523/KG.

Isobutane Prices in India

The domestic alkylation and refrigerant-sector buying recovered in India, the import-linked feedstock firmed too, and the price climbed by 1.3% to a value of USD 0.477/KG.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q2 2026 in India?

  • Alkylation and R-600a refrigerant purchasing rebounded.
  • Firmer import-linked feedstock raised production costs.
  • Aerosol demand held up, and the quarter finished around USD 0.477/KG.

For the Quarter Ending March 2026

Isobutane Prices Q1 2026:

  • United States: USD 0.446/KG
  • China: USD 1.290/KG
  • Germany: USD 0.519/KG
  • India: USD 0.471/KG

Isobutane Prices in the United States

Q1 went against the US, as the refinery turnarounds thinned the alkylation demand and the buyers drew down the inventory ahead of the spring driving season, easing the prices by 1.3% to a value of USD 0.446/KG. That became the base from which the Q2 rebounded.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q1 2026 in the United States?

  • Refineries entered seasonal turnaround.
  • Buyers ran down stocks ahead of spring gasoline-blending season.
  • The two combined to soften the market to USD 0.446/KG.

Isobutane Prices in China

China gave back 2.3%, down to a value of USD 1.290/KG, as the lingering oversupply met the thin post-holiday buying and the market stayed soft until the Q2 turned it around.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q1 2026 in China?

  • Ongoing oversupply and heavy stocks drained any urgency from buyers.
  • Post-holiday demand was thin.
  • That mix pulled the market down to USD 1.290/KG, which Q2 later clawed back.

Isobutane Prices in Germany

Germany softened too, down by roughly 1.0% to a value of USD 0.519/KG, as the cooler regional alkylation demand and some pre-spring destocking weighed on the market before the Q2 settled things down.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q1 2026 in Germany?

  • Alkylation and isobutylene-derivative demand cooled off with the season.
  • Pre-maintenance destocking trimmed demand, market held close to USD 0.519/KG.

Isobutane Prices in India

India eased by 0.8% to a value of USD 0.471/KG, as the slower seasonal refrigerant buying and the pre-season destocking deepened the dip.

Why did the price of Isobutane change in Q1 2026 in India?

  • Seasonal refrigerant and alkylation buying tailed off.
  • Buyers destocked ahead of the season.
  • The market eased to USD 0.471/KG, then turned back up in Q2.

Quarterly Isobutane Price Trends

China's inventories are the thread that runs through all of the six quarters. The global Isobutane prices dropped sharply in Q3 of 2025 as the Chinese surplus correction took hold, kept sliding into Q1 2026, and then found their footing in the Q2. Overall, the average moved from a value of USD 0.877/KG in Q1 2025 to USD 0.815/KG in Q2 2026, a net decline of roughly 7.1 percent. The remaining movement in the curve traces back to the natural gas liquids and the naphtha cycles.

Quarter Price (USD/KG) QoQ Change Direction
Q2 2026 0.815 +1.4% ↑ Rising
Q1 2026 0.804 -1.8% ↓ Falling
Q4 2025 0.819 -0.7% ↓ Falling
Q3 2025 0.825 -6.6% ↓ Falling

Q1 2025 0.877 - - Stable

What was Isobutane Price in 2025?

The year 2025 was a weak year for Isobutane worldwide, and China wore most of the blame for it. The global average began near a value of USD 0.877/KG in Q1, drifted down to USD 0.819/KG by Q4, a full-year loss of roughly 6.6 percent. A stubborn Chinese inventory overhang and the soft MTBE buying did most of the damage. The steadier alkylation and refrigerant demand elsewhere kept the slide from getting any worse.

Isobutane Prices in the United States in 2025

The US mostly marked time, with the prices slipping from about a value of USD 0.460/KG in Q1 to USD 0.452/KG by Q4, a narrow 1.7 percent decline, as the alkylation demand ebbed and flowed alongside the tracking natural gas liquids costs. In short, the market stayed largely flat overall.

Isobutane Prices in China in 2025

China had it rougher, with the prices falling from around a value of USD 1.470/KG in Q1 to USD 1.320/KG by Q4, off by some 10.2 percent, on the back of the oversupply, the weak MTBE buying, and the inventories that just wouldn't clear.

Isobutane Prices in Germany in 2025

Germany bucked the trend, firming from about a value of USD 0.505/KG in Q1 to USD 0.524/KG by Q4, a gain of roughly 3.8 percent. The reliable European alkylation demand met the firmer energy and naphtha costs.

Isobutane Prices in India in 2025

India stayed put, with the prices edging from about a value of USD 0.478/KG in Q1 to USD 0.475/KG by Q4, a slight 0.6 percent dip. The steady alkylation and refrigerant demand kept the market range-bound.

Key Questions Answered in the Report

The petrochemicals are the main destination for it. Isobutane gets dehydrogenated to isobutylene for use in MTBE, butyl rubber, and polyisobutylene, and it also feeds the refinery alkylation units directly. Smaller but still real volumes go into the low-GWP refrigerant equipment, the aerosol propellants, and the straight LPG fuel blending.

The Q2 2026 averages come to a value of USD 0.451/KG in the United States, USD 1.310/KG in China, USD 0.523/KG in Germany, and USD 0.477/KG in India. The heavy stocks and the naphtha feedstock costs make China the priciest of the four.

Down, and then back up again. The global average dropped from a value of USD 0.819/KG in Q4 2025 to USD 0.804/KG in Q1 2026 as the Chinese inventory pressure persisted, then rose to USD 0.815/KG in Q2, a gain of 1.4 percent across the half. The firmer alkylation demand and the dearer feedstock drove the recovery.

There were two things at play. The Chinese oversupply spilled over into the new year, with the high inventories dulling the buying urgency across the region. On top of that, the refinery turnaround season in the US and Europe added its own drag as well. Together, the two brought the market down to a value of USD 0.804/KG before it turned around.

One can figure a range of USD 0.81 to 0.87/KG globally for the rest of the year 2026. The reviving alkylation and isobutylene-derivative demand, the Chinese stocks clearing gradually, and the firmer natural gas liquids costs, all point in that direction.

China topped the table despite having a substantial domestic capacity, propped up by the inventory and the naphtha feedstock pressure. Germany carried a firm premium owing to the energy and naphtha costs. India sat in a steady middle owing to the import-linked demand. The US came in cheapest of all of them, owing to its plentiful natural gas liquids.

Monthly. For live figures, reach out to the Expert Market Research team.

The natural gas liquids and the naphtha feedstock are the main levers here, with the refinery alkylation run rates close behind, and then the buying cycles of the refrigerant and aerosol sectors. Crude sits upstream of all of it, being the ultimate driver of the whole chain.

The US leads on the strength of its abundant natural gas liquids, with the Chinese and European refiners not too far behind it. If one moves the natural gas liquids costs or shifts the alkylation demand, the effect ripples through every single regional Isobutane market.

One can lean on the quarterly trends and forecasts to line up the alkylation and refrigerant-grade contracts with the seasonal driving and cooling demand. The natural gas liquids costs give the cleanest read on the production economics, and locking in a forward cover before the Chinese inventories normalise can work out in a buyer's favour.
