Market Overview

Magnesium Powder prices in Germany, the highest-cost reporting region, rose 6.1% in H1 2026, climbing from USD 4.92/KG in Q1 to USD 5.22/KG by Q2 as recovering aerospace structural, pyrotechnic, and iron desulphurisation formulation procurement and firmer dolomite reduction and production costs reversed the brief Q3 2025 market dip. Globally, the average rose from USD 3.468/KG in Q1 to USD 3.676/KG in Q2, a 6.0% gain. For H2 2026, a global average of USD 3.59-4.03/KG is expected, with continued firming on Middle East supply disruptions and growing aerospace, pyrotechnic, and metallurgical sector demand globally.

Magnesium Powder is a reactive light metal in finely divided particulate form, produced by grinding or atomising primary magnesium metal manufactured by the Pidgeon silicothermic process, in which calcined dolomite is reduced by ferrosilicon under vacuum at approximately 1200 degrees Celsius to yield magnesium vapour that is condensed and refined, or by the electrolytic process, in which anhydrous magnesium chloride from seawater or carnallite ore is electrolysed in fused-salt cells to produce liquid magnesium metal. With density of 1.74 grams per cubic centimetre, magnesium is the lightest structural metal, and in powder form it is highly reactive with a low ignition temperature and high heat of combustion producing intense white light. The largest pull comes from pyrotechnic and military formulation, where magnesium powder serves as the primary fuel in signal flares, tracer ammunition, and incendiary compositions. Molten iron desulphurisation by powder injection, nodularising agent for ductile iron casting, powder metallurgy component manufacture, and Grignard reagent synthesis add further major demand. Dolomite and energy costs, pyrotechnic and steelmaking output, and regional capacity all feed into the price.

Magnesium Powder Price Forecast for 2026

The balance of supply and demand for Magnesium Powder through H2 2026 leans moderately firm. Dolomite reduction and electrolytic production costs firmed from Middle East energy disruptions. Pyrotechnic, iron desulphurisation, and lightweight alloy demand are growing with expanding defence, steel, and automotive production globally.

The main upside risk is energy cost spikes alongside accelerating aerospace lightweight alloy and next-generation magnesium-ion battery anode research procurement. The main downside risk is continued Chinese Pidgeon process capacity surplus maintaining competitive price pressure below the forecast range.
