Market Overview

Polytetrafluoroethylene prices declined across 2025. The United States is the most expensive market in our coverage and moved lower with everything else, falling from USD 19.00/KG in the first quarter to USD 18.20/KG in the fourth, a decline of roughly 4.2%. Weak downstream consumption, comfortable availability, cheap Chinese offers and cautious forward buying drove that move, and steady fluorspar costs slowed the descent without halting it. The global benchmark eased from USD 15.80/KG to USD 15.00/KG over the year, down about 5.1%. We look for a global average of USD 14.3 to 15.0/KG in the second half of 2026, with demand set to stay soft while supply remains ample.

The polymer comes from the suspension or emulsion polymerisation of tetrafluoroethylene, sold as granular, fine-powder and dispersion grades. TFE itself is synthesised from chloroform and hydrofluoric acid, and that chain runs back to acid-grade fluorspar. Chemical inertness, thermal stability up to around 260 degree Celsius and an extremely low coefficient of friction make PTFE the default material wherever service conditions turn severe. Chemical processing is the largest end use, covering gaskets, seals, linings, hoses, valve seats and expansion joints. Electrical & electronics follows through wire insulation and circuit boards, then non-stick coatings, then automotive parts, then aerospace components. Chemours, Daikin, AGC, Gujarat Fluorochemicals, Dongyue and HaloPolymer supply most of the market.

Polytetrafluoroethylene Price Forecast for 2026

Chinese operating rates set the tone for the second half. Dongyue and Sinochem run around 85 kilotonnes of nameplate capacity between them, and Asia-Pacific took over half of world consumption in 2025. Chemical processing demand is flat, electronics is recovering slowly, semiconductor-grade offtake is growing from a small base, and the surplus persists through all of it. Fluorspar, hydrofluoric acid and chloroform costs are all holding the floor in place, and between them they are stopping a sharper fall. Gujarat Fluorochemicals added fine-powder capacity during 2025, which adds to available supply in the specialty grades.

Regulation is the wildcard on both sides. The REACH restriction dossier submitted by Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden covers fluoropolymers alongside other PFAS, and a strict outcome would remove European capacity and lift prices sharply. Producers have already moved to non-fluorinated polymerisation aids, and 3M has left the fluoropolymer business entirely. The downside case is simpler. More Chinese output into flat chemical-processing demand would push prices below our range.
