It is the most expensive market in our coverage and it slid with everything else, with prices grinding from USD 20.50/KG in Q1 down to USD 19.30/KG by Q4, a drop close to 5.9%. The reasons were familiar ones. PVDF is a high-performance, semi-crystalline fluoropolymer built by the free-radical polymerisation of vinylidene fluoride monomer. The monomer runs back through R142b and hydrofluoric acid to fluorspar, so fluorspar sits at the base of the cost stack. Lithium-ion batteries dominate demand, where the resin binds electrodes and coats separators. The rest of the demand base is scattered across architectural coatings, chemical-processing pipe, cable jacketing, water-treatment membranes and semiconductor components. Homopolymer grades go mainly into binders & coatings, while copolymer grades serve the more flexible membrane and lining work. Arkema, Syensqo, Kureha, Daikin and Dongyue supply most of the market.
Our read on the second half of 2026 is soft with a firming bias. The capacity China put in years ago still weighs on prices, utilisation is running below what producers would like, and export competition keeps offers keen. Binder demand is starting to firm as electric-vehicle output, storage-cell build, membrane projects and coatings restocking all pick up. That recovery is a gradual climb. Fluorspar and hydrofluoric acid economics keep the cost floor in place and cap the downside. We expect drift and small steps through the period.
Two things could break that pattern. A real squeeze in fluorspar would push prices through the top of our range, and Chinese producers hold an advantage here through integrated fluorite mining and captive R142b supply that Western producers lack. Montreal Protocol quotas cap R142b output outside China, where Chemours and Arkema run around 22,000 and 15,000 tonnes a year. The downside is the mirror image, where fresh Chinese capacity or weaker electric-vehicle cell output would deepen the glut and pull prices below the range.
