The Australia distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) market size is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% between 2024 and 2032.
The Australia distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) market growth is propelled by several key factors, including increasing demand for animal protein, expansion in ethanol production, and a heightened focus on sustainability practices. DDGS, renowned for its nutrient richness and cost-effectiveness, serves as a valuable feed ingredient in livestock diets, particularly for beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, and poultry.
Derived primarily from corn, DDGS offers a nutrient profile rich in digestible fibre and fat, making it an attractive energy source for grazing cattle. Its affordability further bolsters its appeal, representing a significant portion of feed costs, which typically range from 60% to 70% of total production expenses in the livestock industry.
While DDGS presents a compelling option for feed formulation, certain constraints such as limited awareness in developing regions, grain price volatility, and potential adverse effects from excessive consumption pose challenges to market expansion. Moreover, the economic viability of DDGS as a feed ingredient hinges on factors like its price relative to alternatives such as corn and soybean meal.
The demand for DDGS is intricately linked to ethanol production, given its status as a byproduct of the ethanol manufacturing process. As the ethanol market continues its upward trajectory, fuelled by increasing demand for biofuels and renewable energy sources, DDGS availability rises, leading to price reductions and heightened market attractiveness.
Furthermore, DDGS aligns with sustainability goals within the livestock industry, offering a greener alternative to conventional feed ingredients and contributing to efforts to reduce environmental impact. This sustainable aspect, coupled with its nutritional benefits, positions DDGS as a preferred choice in compound feeds for cattle, impacting milk yield and quality while aiding the Australia distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) market development.

DDGS, short for Distiller's Dried Grains with Soluble, is the residual product obtained after the fermentation of maize starch, also known as Corn DDGS, with yeasts to yield ethanol. Post-fermentation, the ethanol is separated through distillation, leaving behind the remnants of the fermentation process, which are subsequently dried.
DDGS sourced from contemporary ethanol facilities is deemed a suitable component for poultry feed. It can be incorporated into starter diets for broilers and turkeys at a rate of 5-8%, while in grower-finisher diets for these birds, as well as diets for laying hens, it can be included at levels of 12-15%.
With corn containing approximately 10% crude protein (CP), distillers grains boasting around 30% CP are often employed as a protein source and occasionally as an extra energy source.
