Electrical turbocharger technology extends the benefits of hybrid electrification to the on-highway heavy-duty sector through electric boosting, turbo compounding, and improved after-treatment thermal management. This is rising the demand of automotive electric turbocharger market as it leads to the possibility of fuel economy savings from engine down-sizing, twenty percent engine-out NOx and soot decrease through transient operations, benchmark brake thermal efficacy, and improved system cost.
For off-highway vehicles (like agricultural tractors), electrical turbochargers could help improve productivity due to fuel economy savings and improved emissions because of more compact downsized engines.
Electrical turbochargers are expected to become more common with several auto makers competing to offer faster automobiles. High performance vehicles and expensive executive cars would most likely be the first beneficiaries of the technology.
Several cars available today use electric turbochargers for better fuel efficiency and performance, which showcases the rising automotive electric turbocharger demand. The first production car to carry the technology was the Audi SQ7. Its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel engine was assisted by an electric turbo system to help it produce 435hp. Volvo’s S90, V90 estate and XC90 SUV come with a broadly similar system (in D5 Powerpulse models).
In 2016, BorgWarner supplied its advanced wastegate turbocharging technology for several hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) from BYD Auto Industry Company Limited. The highly durable turbochargers boosted BYD Auto’s 1.5-litre direct injection gasoline engine in its Qin, Song and Yuan HEVs as well as the 2.0-litre direct injection gasoline engine in its Tang and Song HEVs. As efficiency enablers for hybrid powertrains, BorgWarner’s wastegate turbochargers were devised to fulfil challenging emissions requirements by giving powerful yet efficient performance.
The auto industry is witnessing rapid adoption of electrified hybridisation, leveraging high voltage systems to enhance fuel efficiency and performance. It is suggested that hybrid powertrains boosted by novel technologies would secure nearly thirty percent of the global light-vehicle market by 2030.
Moreover, leading companies today are engaged in developing innovative solutions, demonstrating a key trend in the automotive electric turbocharger market. For example, Garrett’s E-Turbo is a passenger vehicle industry-first innovation. It eliminates turbo lag through a high-speed electric motor placed directly on the turbo shaft between the compressor and the turbine; it also recovers energy, contributing to the vehicle energy management system. For hybrid powertrains, modern innovative solutions such as Garrett’s E-Turbo significantly enhance transient engine performance and low-end torque, deliver more power and faster response, and enable engine efficiency through energy recuperation. Further, such solutions may be used as motor as well as generator, by supporting the boosting system and powering the hybrid motor directly or recharging the battery.
Electrification of a turbocharger eliminates the need for a small high-efficiency turbine to drive the compressor at low flow rates. Electric motors and wide-range compressors of electric turbochargers improve low-end response and extend high-end performance. This, along with recuperated energy, enables the vehicle’s electrical system to contribute to stoichiometric air/fuel ratios required to fulfil future legislations related to emissions. Such solutions are expected to stimulate the growth of the automotive electric turbocharger market.
In India, there is a rising trend of vehicle modification. To cater to this demand, Maruti Suzuki launched Jimny, a compact sized vehicle in June 2024, which has gained substantial popularity in India. The Jimny car comes with an equipped turbocharger kit, which helps bolster its engine power capacity and provide optimal vehicle performance. Such developments have boosted automotive electric turbocharger market share in India.
As per OICA, the global vehicle sales experienced fluctuations between 2019 and 2023. In 2019, sales were at 92,065,258 units, followed by a decline to 79,668,562 units in 2020. Sales saw a recovery in 2021, reaching 83,638,420 units, but slightly decreased again in 2022 to 82,871,094 units. By 2023, sales surged to 92,724,668 units, surpassing the previous high of 2019. The rising vehicle sales is expected to drive the growth of the automotive electric turbocharger industry.
The global sales of passenger cars experienced a significant decline from 64,803,420 units in 2019 to 54,742,117 units in 2020. Recovery began in 2021, with sales increasing to 57,276,040 units. The upward trend continued in 2022, reaching 58,644,601 units, and further accelerated in 2023 with sales climbing to 65,272,367 units. The overall trend indicates a strong recovery and growth in passenger car sales post-2020.
The global sales of commercial vehicles showed a notable fluctuation from 2019 to 2023. In 2019, sales were at 27,261,838 units but dropped to 24,926,445 units in 2020. There was a recovery in 2021 with sales increasing to 26,362,380 units. However, 2022 saw another decline to 24,226,493 units. In 2023, sales rebounded strongly to 27,452,301 units, indicating a growth trend in the commercial vehicle market and in automotive electric turbocharger industry revenue.
As per OICA data, several governments have set ambitious targets for phasing out new internal combustion engine (ICE) light-duty vehicles. Norway aims to achieve 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2025. By 2030, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovenia, and Singapore have committed to full transition targets. The United Kingdom, Denmark, and several US states, including California and New York, have set their targets for 2035. As per automotive electric turbocharger industry analysis, European countries like France and Spain plan for a 2040 transition, while Costa Rica and Cape Verde aim for 2050. Canada targets 2035 for achieving zero-emission vehicle sales. Notably, countries like Japan, Germany, and India have not established official phase-out targets or fall below the 100% ambition level.
