The global basmati rice market value is increasing due to the rising consumer preference for superior quality rice, offering great taste and aroma. The basmati variety forms an integral part of the Middle Eastern cooking. It is used to cook lavish dishes which contain layers of rice, meats, and dried fruits. It also forms a part of the staple diet of many cultures, thus boosting basmati rice consumption globally. The increasing export demand from the Middle Eastern countries is also propelling rice cultivation in key regions. The US and Europe, too, are significant importing countries.
The rising population acts as a catalyst for the growth of the global basmati rice market. The increasing disposable income in major rice consuming nations is driving the market growth. Further, there is expected to be a rise in consumption of premium products, including basmati rice- a premium variety.
With increasing health consciousness among consumers, the popularity of this variety is expected to increase due to its high nutritional value and lower fat content.

The FAO Rice Price Index increased by 21.6% from January to October 2023, reflecting heightened market activity.
The steady growth in rice production, particularly in India, supports the market demand. With per capita food consumption stable at 53.0 kg/year, the resilience of rice production in key regions ensures a consistent supply of basmati rice, globally.
As per USDA, in Pakistan, Punjab accounts for 52% of the nation's rice production, making it the largest rice-producing region, followed by Sindh with 38%. Balochistan contributes 8%, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern Areas have minimal production, at 2% and negligible amounts respectively. Central Punjab and parts of Sindh exhibit the highest yields, indicating regional disparities in rice cultivation capacity.
Pakistan's rice yields have fluctuated significantly from 2014/15 to 2024/25, with a noticeable peak at 4.0 tons/hectare in 2021/22 and the lowest yield at 3.6 tons/hectare in 2019/20. As per Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), for the India's basmati rice export market, Iran emerges as the largest importer, accounting for 25.3% of the total exports, followed by Saudi Arabia with 17.1% and Iraq with 12.3%. These three countries alone represent a substantial portion of the market, indicating the strong demand for basmati rice in the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates and Yemen also contribute notable shares, with 6.5% and 5.2%, respectively, reinforcing the Middle Eastern dominance. Additionally, the United States (4.1%) and Kuwait (3.7%) are prominent non-Middle Eastern buyers, while the United Kingdom (3.3%), Oman (2.0%), and Qatar (1.8%) account for smaller shares. The overall trend shows a concentrated demand in the Middle East, driven by inventory-building efforts and a willingness to pay higher prices. This reflects the regional preference and robust market potential for India's basmati rice.
