The global demand for esters is being primarily driven by the shift towards electric vehicles and the growing focus on sustainability. In 2022, the annual EV production surpassed 10 million cars, which was a sizeable growth from 6.7 million in 2021. The topmost EV producers substantially increased their EV production in 2022, such as BYD (211%), Geely Auto Group (251%), Cherry Auto Co. (136%), Changan Auto Co. (134%), and GAC Group (130%). Other major companies also increased their EV production y-o-y, such as Tesla (40%), Hyundai Motors (43%), BMW Group (32%), and Stellantis (34%).
Over the forecast period, an increasing consumer shift towards sustainable mobility solutions is expected to surge electric vehicle production, thereby necessitating the application of ethers for manufacturing battery coolants, immersion cooling systems, and transmission fluids. This is expected to fuel the ester market expansion. Ethers have excellent dielectric properties and resist varnish formation and oxidation, which ensures the cleanliness of EV systems. They are relatively less toxic, apart from being biodegradable, which makes them the ideal fuel choice for automotive companies seeking to reduce their environmental footprint.
Perstorp launched a new portfolio of saturated synthetic polyol esters in June 2026 for high-performance lubricant applications. The portfolio includes Synthetic-EF 5, Synthetic-EF 15 and Synthetic-EF 22, developed for demanding operating conditions across a wide temperature range. Perstorp states that the products are registered under REACH as biodegradable and have a roadmap toward Lubricant Substance Classification List (LuSC) listing in accordance with EU Ecolabel requirements. The launch expands the availability of application-specific synthetic ester solutions for lubricant formulators seeking thermal performance alongside environmental attributes.
BASF marked 20 years of ester base-stock production at its Jinshan site in Shanghai in May 2026. The company had doubled the site's production capacity three years earlier to address increasing demand for synthetic ester base stocks. BASF highlighted applications in refrigeration lubricants, biohydraulic fluids, data-centre liquid cooling and electric mobility. Its synthetic ester portfolio includes products based on petrochemical and renewable raw materials, with renewable content of up to 90% in some products. The development reinforces Asia's importance for synthetic ester production and application development.
Savita Oil Technologies commissioned Phase 2 of its synthetic ester manufacturing plant at Mahad, Maharashtra, on February 28, 2026, with the development reported in March. The multipurpose facility produces synthetic esters for transformer fluids and is also capable of supplying ester products for automotive and industrial lubricants. Savita specifically identified EV coolants, battery immersion cooling and data-centre cooling fluids as potential applications because of synthetic esters' thermal and dielectric properties. The expansion strengthens India's domestic production capacity for specialised synthetic ester fluids.
Power Grid Corporation of India commissioned what it described as Asia's first 315 MVA, 400/220 kV transformer using synthetic ester oil at its HVDC Bhiwadi substation in February 2026. The project replaces conventional mineral-oil insulation with synthetic ester oil, citing improved environmental performance, biodegradability and fire safety. The development demonstrates the expansion of ester-based fluids beyond conventional lubricant applications into high-voltage electrical infrastructure. It also provides a concrete example of synthetic esters being adopted in large-scale power-transmission equipment where fire safety and environmental characteristics are important considerations.
Sustainability is pushing ester manufacturers toward renewable feedstocks while retaining high-performance characteristics. BASF states that its synthetic ester portfolio uses both petrochemical and renewable raw materials, with renewable content of up to 90% in some products. The company also highlights biodegradability and low toxicity for environmentally sensitive applications. This is particularly relevant to lubricants, refrigeration fluids and other applications where users increasingly evaluate both technical performance and environmental characteristics. The trend is therefore moving beyond simply replacing petroleum-derived ingredients toward designing ester molecules and formulations around renewable-content targets, biodegradability and application-specific environmental requirements.
Electrification is creating new requirements for fluids capable of operating around batteries, electric motors and power electronics. he ester base stocks offered by BASF are particularly designed for fluids in electric vehicles, while all other base stocks are designed for high performance and long fluid life. These synthetic esters can offer thermal stability, lubrication, and dielectric properties that are appropriate for electric devices. This is extending ester applications beyond conventional engine and industrial lubricants toward EV drivetrains, thermal-management systems and specialised cooling fluids. The trend is particularly important as fluid suppliers develop formulations tailored to the different electrical, thermal and materials-compatibility requirements of electrified powertrains.
Refrigeration remains an important application for specialised esters as cooling systems require lubricants compatible with modern refrigerants and demanding operating conditions. BASF reported in May 2026 that it had 20 years of ester base-stock production at its Jinshan site in Shanghai and had doubled production capacity three years earlier. The company linked demand to the need for efficient and reliable cooling solutions, particularly in developing markets. Its next-generation ester portfolio combines products based on petrochemical and renewable raw materials. This is encouraging formulation development around biodegradability, low toxicity, renewable content and compatibility with increasingly sophisticated refrigeration equipment.
The application of esters is continuously expanding to electrical equipment where thermal stability, safety from fires, and eco-friendly features are significant. In February 2026, the Power Grid Corporation of India successfully installed a 315 MVA, 400/220 kV transformer in Bhiwadi HVDC substation, employing synthetic ester fluid. This signifies the utilization of synthetic esters in high-voltage equipment as opposed to being limited to the lubricant industry alone. Ester-based fluids can offer biodegradability and higher fire-point characteristics compared with mineral oils, supporting their consideration in transformers and other electrical applications. Consequently, ester producers are increasingly targeting specialised dielectric and thermal-management applications alongside established automotive and industrial lubricant uses.
Ester manufacturers have been increasingly formulating molecular structures based on performance specifications rather than formulating general purpose molecular structures. According to BASF, their ester base oils are formulated by tailor made molecular structures that will ensure the desired performance for their particular use. The 2026 portfolio from Perstorp includes different grades of Saturated synthetic polyol esters, which include-Synthetic-EF 5, Synthetic-EF 15 and Synthetic-EF 22, for demanding lubricant applications. Such differentiation allows formulators to target viscosity, thermal stability, volatility, biodegradability and equipment compatibility according to end-use requirements. The result is a shift toward specialised ester grades for refrigeration, automotive, aerospace, industrial, marine and electrical applications rather than undifferentiated ester products.
As the global demand for sustainable insulating fluids increases among commercial building owners and transformer manufacturers, the demand for natural esters is expected to increase the ester market value over the forecast period. The introduction of FR3r by Cargill can play a major role in enabling the power industry to shift towards sustainable industrial solutions for managing electricity transmission. FR3r contains zero halogens, sulphurs, petroleum, and silicones. It enhances the insulation life of transformers by nearly 8 times by providing superior moisture management and requires zero maintenance under normal conditions. This is expected to enhance the ester market development over the forecast period, especially since ester is a non-toxic and eco-friendly alternative to existing options.
