The market for maritime remote inspection technology is expanding as ship operators and inspection service providers seek safer, faster, and more data-driven solutions to manual surveys. Shipping companies have to reduce off-hire time, lower inspection costs, and follow tight safety and environmental regulations at the same time. Remote inspection devices like flying drones, underwater remotely operated vehicles, and high resolution imaging units are being equipped as operational tools that not only complement and enhance the inspection of ship hulls but also have the capacity to replace them completely.
Classification societies, port authorities, and shipowners are increasingly willing to accept technology-assisted inspections, especially for interim surveys and condition assessments. In September 2023, DNV broadened its recognition of drone-based inspections for certain vessel structures, thus enabling ship operators to lessen the dependence on rope access teams for the execution of certain survey scopes. This change is a demonstration of how technology adoption is now in line with regulatory acceptance rather than being a pilot, driven initiative.
Technology suppliers are focusing their efforts on both deep-sea commercial ships and coastal fleets. Underwater drone manufacturers such as Deep Trekker and Blueye Robotics have expanded offerings designed for quick deployment in ports, allowing hull checks without the need for a dry dock. These instruments let the operators pinpoint fouling, corrosion, or even structural anomalies at the earliest stages and then they can use the data obtained for the inspection and maintenance of the hulls that have been planned already.

A key factor that has driven the market for maritime remote inspection technology is the growing need for cost saving measures in shipping operations. Vessels that are out of service due to inspections, thereby not generating charter revenue and reducing fleet utilization, are a direct consequence of these inspections. Consequently, remote inspection tools are increasingly being seen by shipowners as a way of cost management rather than as a simple upgrade of the vessel. In April 2024, Mitsui OSK Lines announced to the public the wider usage of underwater drones along its bulk carrier fleet to shorten port stays for routine condition assessments.
Safety aspects have a significant impact on the decision as well. In general, hull inspections expose the involved personnel, whether they are divers or rope access technicians, to potentially dangerous situations. With remote inspection units, the exposure of people to confined spaces and underwater risks is minimized. For instance, Shell Shipping and Trading have introduced remotely operated inspection tools in their fleet safety management system and consider technology supported surveys as a pre-dry dock evaluation stage.
Adoption is further boosted by improvements in technology. Present-day inspection drones are equipped with features such as stabilized imaging, sonar integration, and can transmit data in real-time. In June 2024, Saab Seaeye unveiled the enhancements to the imaging capabilities of its underwater inspection vehicles, pointing to better crack detection and coating condition analysis. These innovations provide the means for inspection service providers to present better, quality visual records to the classification societies and the shipowners.
Nevertheless, difficulties in standardizing and coordinating with regulations are still present. The recognition of remotely gathered inspection data is differently perceived by various classification societies, depending on vessel age and kind of inspection. As a matter of fact, interim surveys are increasingly allowed, while full statutory surveys still predominantly require a physical inspection. Consequently, service providers have to consider remote inspection results as being part of the traditional hull inspection workflow, rather than promoting them as standalone solutions.
On top of that, small operators continue to face cost barriers. Although technology prices have dropped, the investment in qualified personnel, software platforms, and data management systems makes things more complicated. Mid-sized inspection companies usually choose to collaborate with technology vendors rather than building their own capabilities, thus resulting in dependency risks in service delivery models.
Furthermore, the data management and cybersecurity issues add to the constraints. Remote inspections produce a large amount of visual and sensor data, which have to be stored securely and shared among multiple stakeholders. Shipowners are putting more emphasis on controlled access protocols and long term data traceability not only to support maintenance planning but also for insurance discussions.
Despite these obstacles, the future is still bright. Regulating authorities are slowly but surely defining their stance on the acceptance of remote inspections. For instance, in January 2025, Lloyds Register published updated advisory notes which clarified the acceptable scenarios for drone assisted inspections, thus, it can be interpreted as a signal of continuous institutional support.
It is anticipated that during the forecast period, remote inspection technologies will be deeply integrated with the overall hull inspection service offerings. Companies that integrate digital inspection tools with the skill of an experienced survey are in a better position to gain most of the value as the maritime industry strives to maintain a balance between efficiency, safety, and compliance requirements.
