The South Korea beverage industry faces a multi-front cost challenge in Q1 2026 as the Iran-US-Israel conflict disrupts the energy, packaging and agricultural inputs that beverage manufacturing depends on. South Korea imports approximately 70 per cent of its crude oil from the Middle East, and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sent naphtha prices surging 60 per cent, directly affecting the PET bottles, caps and labels used across the beverage sector.
Energy costs are rising sharply. Beverage manufacturing requires significant energy for water purification, pasteurisation, carbonation, bottling and refrigerated distribution. LNG prices in Japan and South Korea have risen approximately 48 per cent since the conflict began. South Korean factories report that suppliers are raising raw material prices by as much as 50 per cent, compressing margins across an industry that already operates on tight profitability.
The beer segment has been specifically highlighted in Reuters reporting as feeling the full force of the war-fuelled energy crisis across Asia. Brewing is energy-intensive, requiring precise temperature control for fermentation, pasteurisation and cold storage. Aluminium can prices are up 39.1 per cent year on year, adding packaging cost pressure on top of production energy inflation for canned beverages.
The South Korean government has established an emergency economic task force, but beverage companies are largely managing the cost crisis through operational efficiency improvements, packaging optimisation and selective price increases. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has warned of worst-case scenarios, and the industry is preparing for sustained cost elevation if the conflict extends beyond Q2 2026.

The beverage market in South Korea is undergoing a rapid, and somewhat unpredictable, transformation. There is a move away from traditional categories defined by alcoholic beverages to a focus on health-oriented, functional, and premium non-alcoholic beverages. While alcoholic beverages are still the main category in this space, growing health concerns and evolving lifestyles inspire search for new drink categories, such as ready-to-drink teas, fortified waters, and energy drinks.
This fast-moving environment is marked by new product development, innovative flavors, and collaboration across sectors and among local players and foreign players. Market authorities have listed packaging and green initiatives among the top three areas expected to shape the advancement in the market. While South Korea is known for its coexistence of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, we also see a dual interest in health and wellness. In November 2024, local South Korean brewers adopted clear bottles to signal awareness and transparency to consumers who are taking the time to assess quality beyond price.

Alongside the alcoholic beverage industry, many of South Korea’s emerging subsectors, including functional beverages, are also experiencing strong growth in the evolving beverage marketplace. Functional beverages, defined as beverages that contain vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and herbal ingredients, are designed to provide added health benefits and enhance immunity to health-conscious consumers, which are on the rise. Ready-to-drink (RTD) tea and coffee also are strong subcategories, whilst offering easy-to-drink flavorful options for busy lifestyles that emphasize higher consumer interest in healthier beverages.
Flavored waters like sparkling, vitamin-added and mineral as relaxing hydration options have increased. Functional beverages are consistently popular amongst younger consumers and fitness-oriented individuals who identify performance and alertness benefits.
Additionally, non-alcoholic craft and fermented beverages, non-alcoholic beers, and artisanal sodas representing fermented beverages that apply traditional fermentation to modern tastes are also emerging as a distinctive beverage platform occupying space in the beverage market. All the various beverages will also benefit from innovation in packaging, whatever new consumer engagement, digital-based or not, may arise, as well as in some cases, sustainable sourcing methods that are of interest to consumers.
In addition, through the overall growth of the non-alcoholic and functional beverage supplier space, there are non-alcoholic beverage suppliers placing importance on product differentiation through innovation of localized flavors, using clean label ingredients, and foremost nutritional value. The partnership of local companies with international brands is creating opportunity for speed to market and transfer of technologies.
