Report Overview

Measles remains a highly contagious acute viral respiratory disease caused by measles virus, an enveloped, negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus of the Morbillivirus genus. Transmission occurs predominantly through respiratory droplets and fine aerosol particles, and the virus can spread extraordinarily efficiently in populations with insufficient immunity. According to WHO and CDC estimates published in 2024, approximately 10.3 million measles infections occurred globally in 2023, representing a 20% increase from the preceding year, while approximately 107,500 deaths occurred, predominantly among children younger than 5 years. According to the measles epidemiology forecast by Expert Market Research, measles continues to represent a significant global public-health burden because immunity gaps accumulate rapidly when routine vaccination is disrupted, creating conditions for outbreaks after importation.

Measles Understanding: Disease Overview

Measles remains a highly contagious acute viral respiratory disease caused by measles virus, an enveloped, negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus of the Morbillivirus genus. Transmission occurs predominantly through respiratory droplets and fine aerosol particles, and the virus can spread extraordinarily efficiently in populations with insufficient immunity. Infection typically causes fever, cough, coryza, conjunctivitis and a generalized maculopapular rash, but serious complications include pneumonia, encephalitis, severe diarrhea, dehydration, blindness and death.

Largest Patient Pool

India

Fastest Growing Country

United States

High-Risk Population

Unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated children, infants too young for routine vaccination, immunocompromised individuals, pregnant people and populations living in conflict-affected, displaced or densely populated settings represent the principal high-risk groups.

Key Diagnostic Method

RT-PCR and measles-specific IgM serology, supported by clinical and epidemiological assessment. Molecular genotyping is used to characterize transmission chains and distinguish wild-type infection from vaccine-associated rash.

Major Risk Factor

Insufficient population immunity resulting from missed or incomplete measles vaccination is the central modifiable risk factor. Conflict, displacement, vaccine hesitancy, misinformation and disrupted healthcare services amplify this risk.

Major gap in the market

Persistent immunization gaps, inequitable vaccine access, inadequate outbreak surveillance, diagnostic delays, limited vitamin-A access in vulnerable populations, poor outbreak-response capacity and continuing vaccine confidence problems remain major gaps.

Measles Epidemiology Perspective

The Measles epidemiology division offers information on the patient pool from history to the present as well as the projected trend for each of the 8 major markets. Expert Market Research provides both current and predicted trends for the Measles epidemiology scenario by examining a wide range of studies. Additionally, the report covers the diagnosed patient pool for Measles and their trends. The data is broken down into specific categories, such as total prevalent cases in males and females, and total diagnosed cases across different age groups and patient pools.

Epidemiology Segment

Key Insights

Diagnosed Prevalent Cases of the Disease

Measles is an acute communicable infection, so incidence and outbreak case counts are more meaningful than prevalence. WHO/CDC estimated 10.3 million measles infections globally in 2023, followed by approximately 11 million infections in 2024. Reported surveillance reached 411,877 cases in 2025, substantially below estimated infections because of incomplete detection and reporting.

Gender-Specific Cases of the Disease

Measles infects both males and females, without a consistent biological sex predominance. Observed differences between sexes can arise from vaccination coverage, healthcare-seeking behaviour, population structure and outbreak-specific exposure. Vaccination programmes therefore target children irrespective of sex.

Age-Specific Cases of the Disease

Children younger than 5 years bear the greatest risk of severe disease and death. In the WHO African Region, 63% of confirmed measles cases during January-September 2025 were younger than 5 years and a further 23% were aged 5-9 years. Infants too young to complete routine vaccination and unvaccinated adolescents/adults also contribute to outbreaks.

Ethnicity-Wise Cases of the Disease

Contemporary measles epidemiology does not support ethnicity as an independent biological determinant. Regional disparities primarily reflect vaccination coverage, migration, socioeconomic conditions, conflict, healthcare access and surveillance quality. WHO reported substantial regional variation in 2024 measles burden, including increases in the Eastern Mediterranean, European and South-East Asian regions.

Mortality and Survival Analysis of the Disease

WHO/CDC estimated approximately 107,500 measles deaths globally in 2023 and 95,000 deaths in 2024, mostly among children younger than 5 years. Mortality is concentrated where malnutrition, vitamin-A deficiency, delayed diagnosis and limited access to supportive care coexist with low vaccine coverage.

Country-wise Measles Epidemiology

The Measles epidemiology data and findings for the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and India are also provided in the epidemiology section.

Country

Key Insights

United States

CDC recorded 2,289 confirmed measles cases in 2025, including 48 outbreaks, with 90% of cases associated with outbreaks. By 2026, CDC surveillance had already recorded more than 2,200 confirmed cases and more than 30 new outbreaks at the latest surveillance update.

Germany

Germany experienced substantial measles transmission during the European resurgence. ECDC reported 637 cases in Germany between February 2024 and January 2025, placing the country among the five EU/EEA countries with the highest case counts during that period.

France

France was among the European countries experiencing substantial measles activity during 2024–2025. By December 2025, ECDC attributed four measles deaths in 2025 to France, underscoring continuing severe disease despite declining overall European incidence.

Italy

Italy reported 1,097 measles cases between February 2024 and January 2025, making it one of the principal EU/EEA contributors during the European resurgence.

Spain

Spain recorded 328 measles cases by 27 July 2025, of which 100 were imported and 87 were related to imported cases, demonstrating the continuing role of travel-associated introduction even in settings with high overall vaccination coverage.

United Kingdom

England reported 674 laboratory-confirmed measles cases from January through 31 July 2025, demonstrating continuing community transmission. The UK remains a major surveillance market because measles elimination depends on maintaining high two-dose MMR uptake and rapidly identifying imported cases

Japan

WHO/UNICEF data recorded 265 confirmed measles cases in Japan in 2025 and 45 in 2024. The relatively low absolute burden compared with outbreak-affected countries nevertheless demonstrates that importation can continue even in highly developed immunization systems.

India

India remains a major measles-burden country because of its large population and subnational immunity gaps. Contemporary WHO India reporting documented outbreaks requiring targeted MR vaccination, enhanced fever-rash surveillance and community outreach. In Andhra Pradesh, seven measles outbreaks were identified between January and March 2025, prompting targeted vaccination drives from May to July 2025.

Key Market Gaps, Untapped Opportunities, and Emerging Growth Areas in the Regional Disease Epidemiology Landscape

According to contemporary 2023–2026 evidence, major gaps remain in measles epidemiology, vaccination coverage, surveillance and outbreak control. The central epidemiological problem is the accumulation of susceptible individuals after missed routine immunizations. WHO/CDC estimated 10.3 million infections in 2023 and approximately 11 million in 2024, despite measles being preventable through a highly effective vaccine. A major opportunity therefore exists in restoring routine two-dose vaccination coverage. In 2024, global first-dose coverage reached 84% and second-dose coverage 76%, leaving a substantial number of susceptible children. Reaching the approximately 95% two-dose population-immunity threshold is the principal long-term strategy for preventing sustained transmission.

Measles: Treatment Overview

The management of measles primarily focuses on prevention, rapid diagnosis, supportive treatment and interruption of transmission. There is currently no specific antiviral therapy approved by the U.S. FDA for treatment of measles, making vaccination and outbreak control the dominant components of disease management. Supportive care is the foundation of treatment for uncomplicated infection. Patients require adequate hydration, nutritional support, fever management and clinical monitoring for respiratory or neurological deterioration. Most uncomplicated cases recover without specific antiviral therapy. Pneumonia management requires early recognition of respiratory compromise and treatment of secondary bacterial infections when clinically indicated. Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of severe measles morbidity and mortality, particularly among young children and malnourished patients.
