Regions Covered
Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affecting the lungs but capable of involving other organs such as the kidneys, spine, and brain. It spreads through airborne droplets when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. TB is broadly classified into latent tuberculosis infection, where the bacteria remain inactive without symptoms, and active tuberculosis disease, which presents with clinical symptoms and is transmissible. Pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common form, while extrapulmonary tuberculosis affects other body sites. Risk factors include weakened immunity, malnutrition, and close contact with infected individuals.
The tuberculosis epidemiology division offers information on the patient pool from history to the present as well as the projected trend for each of the 8 major markets. Expert Market Research provides both current and predicted trends for the tuberculosis epidemiology scenario by examining a wide range of studies. Additionally, the report covers the diagnosed patient pool for Tuberculosis and their trends. The data is broken down into specific categories, such as total prevalent cases in males and females, and total diagnosed cases across different age groups and patient pools.

The tuberculosis epidemiology data and findings for the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and India are also provided in the epidemiology section.
Across the covered regions, tuberculosis epidemiology shows marked geographic variation, with higher burden persisting in Asia compared to Western countries. In India, incidence declined from 237 to 187 per lakh population between 2015 and 2024, with 26.18 lakh notified cases and mortality reduced to 21 per lakh, as per the World Health Organization and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In the United States, cases remain concentrated among non–United States-born populations, accounting for 87% in Virginia, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Japan reported 10,096 cases in 2023 with a notification rate of 8.1 per 100,000, as per the Research Institute of Tuberculosis.
The treatment of tuberculosis involves a standardized, multi-drug antibiotic regimen administered over a prolonged period, typically six to nine months. First-line anti-tubercular drugs include isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol, used in combination to prevent drug resistance. Treatment is divided into an intensive phase and a continuation phase to ensure complete eradication of the bacteria. Directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS), recommended by the World Health Organization, enhances adherence and treatment success. In cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis, second-line medications and longer treatment durations are required, often with closer clinical monitoring.
