Another factor is the development of hub airports with several terminals interconnected by underground conveyor belts to create unique systems capable of managing thousands of units of luggage every hour.

For example, in 2021, BEUMER Group was selected by airport operator Avinor to devise, integrate and operate a new baggage handling system to replace the standing system at Oslo Airport. This investment was aimed at ensuring ‘future-proof’ operations and making Oslo Airport a central hub. The baggage handling system integrated modern technology that would enable Oslo Airport to carry out forward-thinking operations based on data-driven decisions. A CrisBag® tote-based baggage handling system would be delivered as an end-to-end solution for the entire baggage handling process. At Oslo Airport, the CrisBag system was slated to commence operations in 2024.
In 2020, BEUMER Group was awarded a contract to upgrade the baggage handling system at Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 2. The project was slated for completion in 2024, and entails the refurbishment of the terminal’s current tilt-tray sorter-based baggage handling system and renewal of associated equipment including conveyors, carousels, early bag storage (EBS) system, control system hardware and software.
In 2023, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) in India commenced the installation of an integrated high-speed cart system (ICS) at the airport’s Terminal 1 to offer a superior passenger baggage experience. The installation of the system was expected to bring consistency to the baggage handling process at the airport and enable high-speed steadfast operations with superior throughput. The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled Integrated Cart system led to error-less baggage sorting.
Airports today face the challenge of reducing costs and improving efficiency in baggage handling. Batch building is an approach that is easy to apply and can be set up according to the requirements of individual airports. It helps increase efficiency, flexibility and safety in baggage handling operations without significant extra space requirements and changes to the physical layout. Batch building is based on the principle of storing and retrieving goods in batches, and spares space as well as resources which makes it suitable for airports with limited space. In recent years, this technology has witnessed increased adoption in baggage handling systems, and is expected to grow in future.
