Application Specific Integrated Circuits or ASICs refer to non-standard integrated circuits devised for a particular application or use. Usually, an ASIC design is undertaken for a product with a large intended production run. Application specific integrated circuits may carry a significantly large percentage of the electronics required on a single integrated circuit.  Application specific integrated circuits are costly to design, therefore, employed generally in high volume products (such as cell phones and applications of the like). However, application specific integrated circuits may help reduce cost for applications if the volumes are sufficiently high. The application specific integrated circuit design may be customized to fulfil precise product requirements, furthermore, extra components can be significantly decreased in number as most of the whole design can be held in one integrated circuit.

Initially, application specific integrated circuits focused on logic function, however, novel mixed signal application specific integrated circuits integrate analogue (including RF) as well as logic functions, enabling a complete system on chip (SoC) wherein a whole system or product is put together on the chip with no requirement of additional components. This makes a mixed signal application specific integrated circuit design very useful for several applications.

Application specific integrated circuit development is a costly process. To decrease costs, several levels of customization may be used. There are fundamentally three levels of application specific integrated circuit that may be employed:

Gate Array – This is the least modifiable, with standard silicon layers but customizable metallisation layers permitting interconnectedness between different areas on the chip. This kind of application specific integrated circuit is suited to situations where a large volume of standard functions are needed that may be connected in a certain way to fulfil the given requirement.

Standard Cell – Here, the mask is a custom design, but the silicon comprises library elements. This offers a significant degree of flexibility if standard functions are able to fulfil requirements.

Full Custom Design – This is the most flexible type as it entails the application specific integrated circuit design to the transistor level. The design can be customized to precise circuit requirements. However, this type is costly and takes a lot of time to develop.

Application specific integrated circuits can offer solutions to challenges that are hard to resolve using conventional parts. Examples include ESD protection for harsh environment, wide supply voltage and temperature range, reverse polarity protection, overvoltage protection and detection, short and open circuit protection and detection, over temperature shut down, error code correction (ECC) on memories and communications links, spread spectrum clock and slew rate control to reduce EMI, and dual lock-step Arm architectures.

Benefits of application specific integrated circuits include decreased BOM, enhanced performance, lesser power consumption, better functionality, improved security, reduced size and weight, enhanced IP protection, better yields, decreased test and assembly costs, and better reliability.
