With the proliferation of open-plan offices and flexible co-working spaces, and increasing repurposing of spaces such as warehouses, acoustic panels have gained much significance; there has been a growing need for sound absorption in large spaces where sounds echo. Acoustic panels are used to make rooms and spaces quiet. This need for soundproofing solutions for residential and commercial spaces is expected to drive the global market for architectural acoustic panels. North America and Europe are expected to be key markets.
Satisfactory acoustics is vital to the proper functioning of spaces such as auditoriums and lecture rooms. Further, acoustics of houses and offices has a significant impact on the quality of people’s lives as people are continually exposed to various sounds on a daily basis. Architects combine sound, structure, form, material and spatial organization to create suitable acoustic environments. Acoustic panels are used in halls and theatres to offer better experiences. Modern acoustic panels are incorporated through orchestration and assembly.
With open-plan office designs becoming increasingly popular, acoustic privacy has assumed much significance. While screens, dividers, cocoons and booths have been considered as solutions, occupying more floor space is not possible in some surroundings. In such cases, emphasis is on ceilings and walls. Several solutions related to walls help reduce noise as well as enhance aesthetics through attractive designs. For example, SoundPly by Navy Island enables architects to select a versatile interior cladding material to completely conceal its acoustic function while giving a sleek look. SoundPly is thin and functions as a virtually unified wooden background that reduces sound in any room. It offers porous as well as resonate sound absorption, making it one of the quietest acoustic panels.
Common materials employed in manufacturing architectural acoustic panels include mineral fibers and fabrics, fiberglass, wood and wood fiber, and natural fibers. Architectural acoustic panels may be flat (rectangular, circular, polygonal or irregularly shaped), sculptured/dimensional (in a variety of shapes and textures or perforated. Panels and plasters are available in a complete range of colours.
Plasterboard acoustic panels, as the name suggests, are made of plasterboard. Full depth round perforations are made to the panel to improve its acoustic properties. These panels are generally used in high traffic area ceilings, library ceilings, theater and auditorium upper walls and ceilings.
Acoustic metal panels are made of perforated metal skins encased in acoustic sound absorbers. Such panels combining metal and absorptive material are employed where durability and aesthetics are warranted in addition to maximum noise absorption. Acoustic metal panels are generally employed in gymnasiums, industrial fabrication areas, airports, concert halls, HVAC noises etc.
Other types of architectural acoustic panels include micro-perforated acoustic ceiling and wall panels (for residences, home theatres, restaurants, train stations, hospitals, lobbies, etc.), wood wool acoustic panels (for ceilings, walls, and wet spaces such as swimming pool ceilings), aluminium composite acoustic panels (for suspended ceilings in conference halls, lobbies), polyester acoustic panels ( for hanging partitions, ceilings, wall paneling), fabric acoustic panels (for lecture halls, classroom walls and ceilings), stretched ceiling acoustic panels (for seamless ceiling applications), timber acoustic panels (for libraries, museums, theatres, lecture halls), printed acoustic panels (for walls in residential or commercial spaces such as office, meeting rooms, etc.), plastic acoustic panels (for offices, classrooms, lobbies, auditoriums), among others.
There has been growing emphasis on green architectural practices that may reduce harmful emissions and carbon footprint. Sustainable soundproofing solutions are a way of reducing damage to the environment. Eco-friendly acoustic panels, along with other soundproofing solutions, are made (at least partially) of non-toxic and recycled material that is relatively safe to the environment and does not generate toxic waste. Several firms are looking to provide sustainable soundproofing solutions. For example, Soundproof Cow offers eco-friendly solutions made of nearly 80% recycled material. An example is Echo Absorber™ Acoustic Cotton - cotton panels made of 80% recycled cotton. These are VOC, fiberglass and formaldehyde free. Such solutions are expected to contribute to market growth.
