The global automotive cabin air quality sensor market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.2% during the period 2022-2027.
Growing awareness among customers with respect to air quality and the harmful consequences of air pollution is expected to drive the global automotive cabin air quality sensor market. Traffic significantly impacts air quality. It is estimated that road transport accounts for nearly 30% of particulate emissions in European cities, and almost 50% in OECD countries through diesel traffic. Such pollution has short and long term health impacts. Pollution caused by traffic has been linked to asthma, cancer, and other health problems.

In fact, it has been reported that drivers and passengers inside a car are exposed to greater levels of pollutants as compared to foot-travellers and bicyclers outside the car. This is because vehicles trap more pollutants within.
Pollutants such as carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons are detected by air quality sensors, which send data to the vehicle air conditioning system's control unit for further processing. The data from the air quality sensor can be used by the car’s air conditioning system to manage numerous parameters (such as interior temperature, recirculation flap position, and fan speed) independently and optimally.
Through advancements in technology, companies are offering modern and sophisticated in-cabin air quality sensor solutions. For example, Renesas' In-Cabin Air Quality Sensor Solution offers intelligent algorithms to monitor air quality. The company claims to help reduce development time and decrease development costs with the reference design and software for smart and energy-efficient automotive HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems using air quality sensors. The system offers improved passenger comfort and health by detecting a wide range of organic pollutants [Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)], oxidizing pollutants (Ozone), humidity, and temperature. The company’s MEMS-based sensor solution offers measurements with stable features and significant accuracy employing neural network-trained firmware (AI). Further, the system offers easy integration and decreased R&D effort with user-friendly GUI and firmware support.
In 2017, Hella and BreezoMeter introduced an air quality management system for vehicles to generate dependable real-time data on the air quality in and around the vehicle, and provide this data to passengers. The collaboration further sought to offer customized solutions for active health management on the basis of this cloud-based technology. The product featured two key components:
1) PM2.5 sensor – Hella developed a sensor that measured particulate matter levels within the vehicle as well as in surrounding air in real time.
2) BreezoMeter Data and Cloud - The data from the sensor was augmented with data from BreezoMeter on additional pollutants [such as carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and PM10].
The cloud solution enabled validation and organization of over 1.6 TB of BreezoMeter data every hour. Predicted air quality data were sent to the vehicle via an interface, processed centrally within the vehicle, and displayed on the vehicle's information system.
Thus, technological developments, increased real-time data processing capacities of air quality monitoring solutions and commercialization of sensor technologies are expected to stimulate the market.
