The production of biochar can be done using a variety of raw materials like grass, cow manure, wood chips, rice husk, bagasse, and other agricultural residues.
The increase in interest in climate-smart agriculture has ignited curiosity in using biochar to use it to protect the environment while also utilising it for enhancing soil fertility. Biochar provides organic farmers with a strategic advantage without using chemical inputs. It aids the growth of beneficial soil microbes that support healthy plant growth. Thus, biochar can also be used to fight against the challenges associated with food production and climate change, especially in developing countries.

Favourable government policies; rising organic agricultural activities; growing livestock farming sector; and exploration of newer applications are the major trends impacting the global biochar market growth
Nov 11, 2023
BIOSORRA announced the launch of the largest biochar-producing plant in East Africa. The company will provide its high-quality biochar to Kenya Nut Company.
Jul 11, 2022
Black Bull Biochar was awarded a government contract worth EUR 3 million. The company would use this opportunity to pilot a B2B digital platform to unite industrialists, agriculturalists, and researchers.
May 12, 2022
Carbon Streaming Corporation entered into a carbon credit streaming agreement with “Restoration Bioproducts”, a subsidiary of Restoration Bioproducts LLC, to support the construction of a biochar production facility in Virginia.
May 12, 2022
Old Saybrook partners launched a start-up, BluSky, to capture carbon from the dead wood and turn it into biochar. The start-up aims to remove 10,000 metric tonnes of carbon per year.
Increasing interest in sustainable agriculture
The incorporation of biochar in agriculture has a significant impact on reducing global warming by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and sequestering carbon from the atmosphere in soil. The environmental threats of livestock manure, waste-feed residues, and bedding materials can be countered by recycling these into biochar via pyrolysis.
Use of biochar in livestock farming
The use of biochar as a feed additive provides several benefits like improved animal health and enhancement of nutrient intake efficiency. Further, the use of biochar as a feed additive for cows increases their milk productivity and thus helps in expanding the farm’s profitability.
Favourable policies and certifications
The European Biochar Certificate (EBC) by the European Biochar Foundation helps ensure sustainable biochar production and low hazard use in agronomic systems. Despite the lack of certification in China, the government is supporting the use of biochar. For instance, farmers get paid for their residues that are used as feedstock to produce biochar.
Growing number of applications
Companies are exploring the use of biochar in developing facades and adding biochar to road materials and concrete. Moreover, the use of biochar is being explored for several other applications like developing football field.
The increasing pressure from government organisations and international funding agencies to adopt sustainable agriculture to reduce GHG emissions, in countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos is providing an opportunity for biochar producers. Biochar has a huge potential to be used as a complementary input for sustainable agriculture.
Several governments have also developed and funded programs supporting research in the field of biochar to increase its awareness and acceptance as well as to improve agricultural preservation and reduce environmental problems.

“Global Biochar Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032” offers a detailed analysis of the market based on the following segments:
Market Breakup by Technology
Market Breakup by Application
Market Breakup by Region
Based on technology, pyrolysis accounts for a significant biochar market share
Biochar is produced using thermal decomposition of biomass using technologies such as pyrolysis and gasification. These technologies are more widely applicable, scalable, and relatively economical than other technologies. Additionally, for small-scale biochar production, pyrolysis is used by deploying modified stoves and kilns that are simple and low cost, while for capital-intensive large-scale biochar production, larger pyrolysis plants and adequate feedstocks are necessary.
Gasification and pyrolysis systems can be developed as mobile or stationary units. Cooperatives and large enterprises can utilise units with a potential processing capacity of 4,000 kg biomass/hour, at a local or regional level. Farms and small industries can operate small-scale systems that process 50-1,000 kg/hr of biomass. In rural areas, charcoal-making stoves can produce low-cost biochar to build soils. Further, biochar ovens are suitable for clean, healthy, and distributed low-tech biochar production for micro-entrepreneurs or smallholders.
The agriculture sector leads the biochar market in terms of application, due primarily to the rising adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and the need to lower carbon emissions
Biochar from cattle manure is increasingly developed and utilised to enhance soil fertilisation. It also functions as a slow-release fertiliser that releases micronutrients such as potassium and nitrogen, among others, to facilitate plant growth while retaining nutrients and carbon in the soil.
With the growing interest in gardening as a recreational activity, the demand for biochar is significantly surging to improve soil quality and plant growth in household applications. Moreover, the use of biochar to treat various issues associated with soil like poor aeration and increased acidity in home gardening is surging.
