The global cold chain packaging refrigerants market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.4% during the period 2022-2027. The market is expected to be driven by the importance of cold chain packaging refrigerants in ensuring that products maintain a desired temperature consistent with relevant safety regulations and quality standards. Application sectors include pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, chemicals, and cosmetics and personal care. North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are expected to be key markets.
Keeping products cold is vital when temperatures affect the integrity and usability of those goods. This assumes all the more importance when the temperature of such products is a matter of public health or safety. Incorrect temperatures may cause spoilage, fires and even explosions. Thus, in such sectors, a well-kept cold chain is essential. In the military, it is important to maintain the temperature of medical supplies. Cold chain becomes more complex in military applications as goods generally need to be transported over long distances to remote and hot regions. In the food and beverage sector, temperature is crucial for transporting produce, meat and seafood. Any disruption in the cold chain could cause rotting, bacteria or mould. Several fruits are ripened during transit, so a stable temperature is vital. The way meats are frozen also affects meat integrity. The oil and gas sector requires explosion-proof refrigerated containers safe to use on oil rigs, oil tankers and offshore locations. Several hazardous chemicals are susceptible to exothermic reactions. As heat is released from chemical goods, a spark, flame or explosion may occur and harm people nearby and ruin the cargo.
Temperature-regulated storage and shipping is an intricate activity with multiple dimensions. Challenges involve preventing temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical and biotech products from overheating (‘cool chain’), and actively keeping products chilled. A major challenge is keeping products cold over days in transport, without access to electrical cooling. Conventionally, solid carbon dioxide (known as dry ice) has been used to keep goods frozen while in transit. The key advantage of dry ice is that it is an effective cooling medium, capable of keeping the consignment very cold, as low as -78oC (-95oF) over extended durations.
However, dry ice has disadvantages, especially for biotech and other life sciences goods. A major drawback is that as the dry ice sublimates, it transforms into carbon dioxide removing oxygen from the container. This may cause biological samples to spoil and damage certain chemical products. Further, dry ice needs to be added as heavy slabs which are difficult to manage against becoming dislodged, damaging fragile goods. Also, dry ice is a relatively coarse cooling medium and difficult to manage at cold, rather than freezing, temperatures.
Eutectic gel packs are employed as cooling media in cold chain refrigeration. ‘Eutectic’ refers to the gel that is a mixture of two or more substances; the combined melting point of the mixture is lower than the individual elements. Their eutectic point is the temperature maintained as the mix melts, here, transforming from solid to liquid. Therefore, cooling gels are kept in moisture tight rigid containers or flexible bags. Companies like Sofrigam offer cooling gels that use mixes of carboxymethyl and cellulose, varied to provide a range of eutectic points. Sofrigam Snowgam® cooling gels include Blue eutectic gel for temperatures between +2oC and +25oC, Pink eutectic gel for temperatures of down to -18oC, White eutectic gel for temperatures between -15oC and -5oC, and Flexible blue gel pack for phase change temperatures at around 0oC.
Advantages of Eutectic gel packs include slow, controlled release (slow sublimation of the gels enables the maintenance of temperatures more precisely over longer periods), sustainability and safety (gel packs are reusable and recyclable, and contain no gas, making them airfreight-friendly); these are also non-sensitizing, non-toxic and non-mutagenous towards genetic products, convenience (gels may be supplied separately or with refrigerated boxes, and come in different sizes and as flexible or customized units, enabling calculation of the precise gel package required to cool the individual consignment).
Nordic Cold Chain Solutions offers Nordic Ice® Refrigerants; Nordic Ice® is the company’s full line of reusable refrigerants, and meets specific temperature sensitive shipping needs. Nordic Ice refrigerants are available in multiple sizes and materials, and may be used ambient, hot, refrigerated, or frozen to protect products in a multitude of situations. Solutions include gel packs, bricks, and wraps.
