The Middle East and Africa Vessel Monitoring System market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.9% during the period 2023-2028. Vessel monitoring systems are used by fisheries authorities, coastguards and navies for surveillance, search and rescue, resource management and fisheries control.
The need to monitor human activity in the ocean is expected to boost the Middle East and Africa Vessel Monitoring System market. Oceans produce most of the oxygen we breathe, absorb a large quantity of carbon dioxide emissions, regulate climate, and feed the people of the world. It is reported that over half of the marine environment has been significantly changed by human activity, with over 30% of fish stocks overexploited. In light of these facts, it becomes essential to monitor illegal fishing activity in the ocean, and governments are making efforts to check illegal fishing activity. In 2021, The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries announced the deployment of a satellite monitoring system of fishing vessels over 15 metres. This system was based on three complementary components, namely a central computer system at the ministry, 50 central and local control rooms, and terminals ensuring the transmission of data relating to the location and activities of vessels while guaranteeing confidentiality. The terminals would be set up in 874 vessels (6.72% of the fleet). The ministry laid emphasis on the importance of the surveillance system in optimising the safety of fishermen and vessels and combating illegal fishing which threatens seafood wealth and the sustainability of the sector. The system also provided a database for scientific research programmes on monitoring the exploitation of fishing sites. It would help decrease the costs of naval surveillance, address illegal fishing and protect small fishermen against losses.
The Middle East and Africa Vessel Monitoring System market is expected to be driven by growing adoption of modern solutions. For example, in 2021, it was reported that The Sultanate of Oman would install automatic tracking devices for coastal fishing vessels to develop electronic monitoring systems. The step came in implementation of the project to develop electronic monitoring systems, which was established in 2000. The government would start installing tracking devices in coastal and artisanal fishing boats as a first stage, before moving to artisanal fishing boats. The automatic tracking system for ships and boats to be used on the fishing vessel was one of the modern and advanced systems in the world of fisheries monitoring and tracking of fishing boats.
In 2016, SRT announced that it had received an order for 400 AIS Identifier VMS Transceiver kits to be deployed in West Africa for the tracking and identification of small fishing vessels. The Identifier VMS Transceiver kits would be deployed by authorities as part of a long-term programme to track and identify small and medium size fishing boats and assist with the prevention of illegal and unregulated fishing. The Identifier VMS Transceivers were supplied as complete, ready to install kits, and were enabled with SAT-Trak satellite AIS (S-AIS) detection optimisation technology which enabled dependable tracking by AIS satellites when beyond coastal network range. In 2016, SRT announced that it had received an initial order and first payment for the supply of AIS vessel monitoring transceivers for deployment in Saudi Arabia.
In countries like Nigeria, installing vessel monitoring system is expected to allow fisheries management authorities to monitor near real time movements, offer directions for vessel inspections upon detected breaches which restricts the costs of routine patrols, enhance compliance with fisheries regulations, and improve the efficacy of search and rescue missions. Further, installation and application of vessel management system would help reduce criminal activity on Nigerian seas by discouraging illicit maritime activity and enhancing obedience with fisheries regulations. In 2022, The Nigerian Government disclosed the establishment of a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) in Lagos, South-West Nigeria and Abuja, the country’s capital, to monitor and regulate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing along Nigeria’s continental shelf. It was noted that nearly 10 million Nigerians were actively engaged in primary and secondary fisheries operations, and that the Nigerian government was encouraging backward integration through commercial aquaculture development to boost local production.
