The global respiratory gas monitors market is expected to be driven by advancements in technology and the necessity to evaluate respiratory gases in surgical and non-surgical settings. Further, rising incidences of lung disease and respiration related ailments are expected to boost demand. North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are expected to be key markets.
To assess respiration, doctors and health care workers employ several types of oxygen and carbon dioxide gas sensors. The gases are monitored in the breath and the blood. Assessing gases in an individual’s breath indicates the efficacy of the lungs to inhale oxygen and exhale CO2. Breath gas analysis is safe and non-evasive and gives an immediate account of respiration efficacy. Breath gas monitoring is, therefore, one of the first procedures to be carried out on a patient in a situation of emergency.
Changes in oxygen levels during breathing are monitored with the help of sensitive oxygen sensors capable of taking a reading every second. To regulate oxygen, ventilator manufacturers employ electro galvanic oxygen sensors able to measure up to 100% oxygen enriched air from compressed oxygen tanks.
Levels of CO2 released from the lungs are monitored through a device called capnograph. A capnograph shows CO2 levels in expelled air in real-time. Capnography enables indirect monitoring of CO2 levels in the blood. A difference between CO2 levels in expelled air and the blood may indicate lung disease.
Over the last century, nearly three hundred different types of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been identified. Although still under study, examination of VOCs through VOC sensor use is a promising domain.
Today, several leading companies are looking to provide sophisticated and efficient respiratory gas monitoring systems. For example, solutions offered by Bedfont Scientific include carbon monoxide (CO) monitors such as the Smokerlyzer, which is used for smoking cessation, and the ToxCO, used by emergency services to screen for CO poisoning. Further, the NObreath FeNO monitor by Bedfont Scientific provides an accurate analysis of airway inflammation for asthma regulation, and the Gastrolyzer range helps in gastrointestinal disorder and food intolerance detection. In 2021, NObreath FeNO monitor witnessed increased demand after the airway inflammation measurement tool was included on the Rapid Uptake Products (RUPs) programme.
In 2020, the newly opened NHS Nightingale Hospital in Harrogate, England, deployed QED Environmental Systems’ Geotech G210 gas analyser, supplied by Bedfont Scientific to validate piped medical gas and evaluate oxygen levels in ventilators.
In 2021, SafeBreath filtered disposable cardboard mouthpieces by MD Diagnostics Ltd. gained popularity over plastic mouthpieces used for carbon monoxide testing. SafeBreath filtered mouthpieces contain a filter membrane with a bacterial and viral efficacy of over 99%.
In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) featured MediPines AGM100, pulmonary gas exchange analyzer as an innovative technology in the 2021 compendium, “WHO compendium of innovative health technologies for low-resource settings”. The portable MediPines AGM100 was chosen for its ability to “instantly detect changes in pulmonary gas exchange in disease states such as COPD, pneumonia, influenza, and ARDS caused by COVID-19”, as reported in the WHO assessment.
