The resin-coated wood fibers are then felted or laid into a mat on a conveyor belt, forming the fiber mat. The fiber mat is then pressed between heated metal plates under high pressure, typically around 30-40 MPa. This heat and pressure cause the resin to cure and the fibers to bond together, forming the HDF panel. After pressing, the HDF panel is cooled and then cut to the desired size and thickness using saws or other cutting tools.

Making of High-Density Fiberboard (HDF)

1.    Wood Preparation

Logs are debarked and chipped into small, uniform pieces. The wood chips are then washed to remove impurities.

2. Pulping

Process: The wood chips are subjected to mechanical pulping, where they are steamed and ground to separate the fibers. In some processes, chemical pulping is also used, where chemicals like sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulfide (Na2S) are used to break down lignin.

Chemical Reactions: C31H34O11 + NaOH + Na2S → Soluble Lignin Fragments

3. Fiber Refining

The separated fibers are further refined and blended with water to create a fiber slurry.

4. Resin Application

The fiber slurry is mixed with thermosetting resins (like urea-formaldehyde (UF) or phenol-formaldehyde (PF)) to bind the fibers together.

Chemical Reactions:

  • Urea-formaldehyde resin formation: H2NCONH2 + 2HCHO → (H2NCONHCH2OH) + H2O
  • Phenol-formaldehyde resin formation: C6H5OH + HCHO → C6H4(OH)CH2OH

5. Mat Formation and Pre-Pressing

The resin-coated fibers are formed into a mat and pre-pressed to remove excess water and air.

6. Hot Pressing

The pre-pressed mat is subjected to high temperature and pressure to cure the resin and bond the fibers, forming a dense and rigid board.

Chemical Reactions:

  • Curing of urea-formaldehyde resin: (H2NCONHCH2OH) + heat → Cured UF Resin + H2O
  • Curing of phenol-formaldehyde resin: C6H4(OH)CH2OH + heat → Cured PF Resin + H2O

7. Cooling and Trimming

The hot-pressed boards are cooled and trimmed to the desired dimensions.

8. Sanding and Finishing

The boards are sanded to achieve a smooth surface and may be further treated or laminated for specific applications.
