About Potassium Citrate

Potassium citrate is a potassium salt of citric acid, commonly used to prevent kidney stones and treat conditions like gout by making urine less acidic. It is available in extended-release tablets and should be taken with a full glass of water. Potassium citrate is also used as a food additive to regulate acidity and improve heart and bone health. It is generally well-tolerated but can cause side effects like upset stomach, nausea, and diarrhoea.

Properties of Potassium Citrate

Potassium citrate is a potassium salt of citric acid, characterised by its white, hygroscopic crystalline powder form. It has a molecular formula of C6H5K3O7 and a molar mass of approximately 306.39 g/mol. Potassium citrate contains about 38.3% potassium by mass and has a melting point of around 200 °C (392 °F). It is highly soluble in water, with a solubility of approximately 1,000 g/L at 20 °C (68 °F), forming an alkaline solution that can help manage urinary acidity. Its high hygroscopicity means it readily absorbs moisture from the air, often leading to deliquescence. Potassium citrate is utilised in various applications, including as a food additive and in medical treatments for kidney stones and metabolic disorders.

Manufacturing Process of Potassium Citrate

The production process of potassium citrate begins with the preparation of a citric acid solution, where citric acid is dissolved in purified water and heated to 80-90 °C. This solution is then filtered through a high-permeability film to remove impurities. Next, activated carbon is added and heated, which helps eliminate colour and other unwanted substances. Following this, the solution undergoes evaporation to reach a saturated state, allowing for the crystallisation of citric acid as it cools.

Once the citric acid crystals are formed, they are re-extracted by dissolving them in water and adding an equal volume of ethanol. Concurrently, a potassium solution is prepared by dissolving potassium bicarbonate in water and heating it to 85-100 °C. The next step involves combining the citric acid solution with the hot potassium bicarbonate solution, adjusting the pH to between 6.5 and 6.8 to facilitate the reaction. Afterward, the resulting potassium citrate solution is again evaporated to a saturated state, promoting the crystallisation of potassium citrate. Finally, the product is filtered, dried, and packaged.

Synthesis of Potassium Citrate

Below are the steps for making potassium citrate:

Step 1: Preparation of Citric Acid Solution

The process begins with the preparation of an aqueous solution of citric acid (C6H8O7). Citric acid can be obtained through the fermentation of glucose or other sugars.

C6H12O6 → C6H8O7 + H2O

Step 2: Neutralisation with Potassium Hydroxide

The citric acid solution is then neutralised by adding potassium hydroxide (KOH). This reaction produces potassium citrate and water:

C6H8O7 + 3KOH → C6H5K3O7 + 3H2O

Step 3: Alternative Neutralisation with Potassium Carbonate

Alternatively, potassium citrate can be produced by reacting citric acid with potassium carbonate (K2CO3). This reaction also produces carbon dioxide (CO2) and water:

C6H8O7 + 1.5K2CO3 → C6H5K3O7 + 1.5H2O + 1.5CO2

Step 4: Crystallisation and Purification

The resulting potassium citrate solution is then concentrated through evaporation and cooled to allow crystallisation. The crystals are collected, washed, and dried to obtain pure potassium citrate.

Applications and Drivers of Potassium Citrate

The potassium citrate market is driven by its diverse applications across food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and personal care industries. In the food sector, potassium citrate serves as an acidity regulator and emulsifier, enhancing the texture and shelf-life of products like baked goods, dairy items, and processed foods. For example, it is increasingly favoured as a low-sodium alternative to sodium citrate due to rising health consciousness among consumers. In pharmaceuticals, potassium citrate is utilised to manage conditions such as kidney stones and renal tubular acidosis. Additionally, its use in cosmetics for preserving formulations and improving product stability further propels market growth. The expanding food and beverage industry, coupled with government investments in pharmaceutical research, are significant drivers of the potassium citrate market's promising outlook.
