Chickpeas Prices, Demand and Supply Overview

India runs the priciest of the four chickpea markets tracked here, and its price climbed 6.1% in H1 2026, from USD 785/MT in Q1 to USD 833/MT in Q2, as tightening domestic stocks and a reimposed import duty combined to firm the Kabuli segment specifically. The global average followed, moving from USD 615/MT to USD 648/MT, about 5.4%. Where this goes next is really a policy question more than a supply one. Australia's record crop is still working its way to market, and once that volume clears port it could provide real relief, but India's tariff stance remains the key swing factor either way, with a global average of USD 640-705/MT looking like the reasonable range for H2 2026.

Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are a legume grown for their protein-dense, nutty seed, traded in two main types: the smaller, darker desi variety, used mostly for flour and split dal, and the larger, lighter Kabuli variety, favored in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine and traded at a real premium. Food processing and retail dal and flour, particularly across South Asia, pulls the largest share of demand, and the rising plant-protein and snack food trend adds a further layer of demand in North America and Europe. Animal feed and seed-stock round out the rest.

What actually moves this market comes down to India's own crop size and tariff policy, the Australian harvest volume and currency effects on its export pricing, the Kabuli-versus-desi grade split, and the plant-protein demand cycle.

Chickpeas Price Forecast for 2026

This market probably isn't settling down in H2 2026, at least not right away. India's reimposed 10% import duty, combined with tightening domestic stocks and rising besan demand, pushed the Kabuli segment higher, and that policy stance, more than any real supply shortage, is doing most of the work on price right now. Meanwhile Australia's record 2025-26 crop, forecast at 1.9 to 2.1 million tonnes, is still working its way toward export markets. Once that volume clears port, it could provide meaningful relief. Put those two forces together and the market should stay firm through the near term before facing real downside pressure later in H2.

Further tightening of Indian import policy, or a shortfall in the domestic rabi crop, would extend the current firmness and push prices higher. Flip the scenario, though, and a record Australian crop clearing to export markets faster than expected would ease buying and pull the market back below the forecast.

Region 2026 Price Range (USD/MT) Outlook
Global Average 640 - 705 Indian tariff policy and tight stocks support near-term gains
India 780 - 870 Reimposed import duty and rising besan demand keep the ceiling high
Turkey 660 - 720 Kabuli premium and steady Mediterranean export demand support a middle tier
Mexico 690 - 755 Premium large-caliber Kabuli grades support a firm middle
Australia 560 - 630 Record crop and a weak currency keep Australia the most affordable

For the Quarter Ending June 2026

Chickpeas Prices Q2 2026:

  • India: USD 833/MT
  • Mexico: USD 726/MT
  • Turkey: USD 692/MT
  • Australia: USD 601/MT

Chickpeas Prices in India

India averaged USD 833/MT in Q2 2026, up 6.1% from Q1's USD 785/MT, the steepest of the four markets in this report. Rising besan, or gram flour, demand added further pressure right on top of an already tightening supply picture.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q2 2026 in India?

Domestic besan demand climbed through the quarter, drawing down mandi stocks faster than expected. The reimposed 10% import duty, back in place since March 2025, removed the tariff-free window Australian exporters had briefly enjoyed. The Kabuli Chana segment specifically firmed on lower-than-estimated carryover stocks, pushing the average to near USD 833/MT.

Chickpeas Prices in Mexico

Mexico came in at USD 726/MT in Q2 2026, up 5.5% from USD 688/MT in Q1, as the premium large-caliber Kabuli grades kept commanding a real premium in export markets.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q2 2026 in Mexico?

The premium attached to Mexican large-caliber Kabuli grades, favored in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern markets, kept export pricing firm even as competition from multiple origins made buyers more price-sensitive generally. Size and quality distinctions alone let Mexican product retain a real premium. The market firmed to near USD 726/MT.

Chickpeas Prices in Turkey

Turkey averaged USD 692/MT in Q2 2026, up 5.2% from USD 658/MT in Q1, as steady Mediterranean export demand supported the gain alongside the broader firming across Kabuli origins.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q2 2026 in Turkey?

Steady Mediterranean and Middle Eastern export demand supported the Turkish market through the quarter, with domestic consumption holding broadly stable right alongside it. Prices closed the quarter near USD 692/MT as the wider Kabuli segment moved higher.

Chickpeas Prices in Australia

Australia averaged USD 601/MT in Q2 2026, up 4.9% from USD 573/MT in Q1, even as the record domestic crop and a weak currency both limited the size of the move.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q2 2026 in Australia?

India's own strong rabi crop reduced its need for imported product, which removed the single largest buyer from the table for Australian growers. The large 2025-26 crop, estimated near 2.1 million tonnes, left substantial unsold stock on farms, so growers adopted a measured selling strategy. The Australian dollar, trading around 0.71 USD, made exports more expensive in dollar terms too, capping the rally near USD 601/MT.

For the Quarter Ending March 2026

Chickpeas Prices Q1 2026:

  • India: USD 785/MT
  • Mexico: USD 688/MT
  • Turkey: USD 658/MT
  • Australia: USD 573/MT

Chickpeas Prices in India

India's Q1 2026 average was USD 785/MT, up 4.4% from Q4 2025.

The reimposed 10% import duty, back in place since March 2025, kept the domestic market insulated from the cheaper Australian supply that had flowed in during the brief 2024 tariff-free window. The rabi crop was performing well too, further reducing India's own need for imports.

Tightening carryover stocks and steady besan demand kept the market firm near USD 785/MT through the quarter.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q1 2026 in India?

The reimposed import duty kept the domestic market insulated from cheaper external supply. A well-performing rabi crop reduced India's own import needs at almost the same time. The average climbed to close to USD 785/MT on tightening carryover stocks.

Chickpeas Prices in Mexico

Mexico's Q1 2026 average was USD 688/MT, up 4.1% from Q4 2025.

Export buyers grew more price-sensitive as multiple origins, India, Turkey, Australia, Canada, all competed actively for the same demand. Premium large-caliber Kabuli grades held their pricing edge regardless, reflected in the higher FOB values for the 12mm product specifically.

The market firmed gradually to near USD 688/MT as the quarter progressed.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q1 2026 in Mexico?

Active competition among multiple origins is really what made export buyers more price-sensitive generally, though premium large-caliber grades held their pricing edge regardless. The average settled near USD 688/MT.

Chickpeas Prices in Turkey

Turkey's Q1 2026 average was USD 658/MT, up 3.8% from Q4 2025.

Steady Mediterranean export demand continued through the quarter, even as the broader external demand environment was better described as steady than bullish. Domestic consumption held stable in parallel.

The market firmed modestly to near USD 658/MT as the quarter progressed.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q1 2026 in Turkey?

Steady Mediterranean export demand is what kept the year-long trend going. Domestic consumption held stable in parallel. The quarter closed with the average near USD 658/MT.

Chickpeas Prices in Australia

Australia's Q1 2026 average was USD 573/MT, up 3.5% from Q4 2025.

The 2025-26 national crop was estimated near 2.1 million tonnes, down slightly from the 2024-25 record but still well above the ten-year average. India's reduced import need, following its own strong rabi crop, removed the biggest buyer from the table for Australian growers.

Unsold stock sitting on farms, combined with a measured grower selling strategy, kept the market firm but capped near USD 573/MT.

Why did the price of Chickpeas change in Q1 2026 in Australia?

India's reduced import need removed the single largest buyer for Australian growers, which might have driven a sharper decline had the large crop not also left substantial unsold stock sitting on farms. Prices edged up only modestly, to close to USD 573/MT, capped by that oversupply.

Quarterly Chickpeas Price Trends

Six quarters of chickpea pricing, laid side by side, reveal a market defined largely by Indian tariff policy shifts rather than any single, continuous supply-demand trend. The global average moved from USD 558/MT in Q2 2025 to USD 578/MT in Q3, USD 596/MT in Q4, USD 615/MT in Q1 2026, then USD 648/MT in Q2 2026, a net gain of about 16.1% across the window. India's reimposition of its 10% import duty in March 2025, followed by tightening domestic stocks through 2026, is what stands out as the dominant driver behind the sustained climb.

What was Chickpeas Price in 2025?

2025 was a year defined by a sharp policy reversal for chickpeas. India suspended its import tariff in May 2024, and Australian exports surged to around 1.4 million tonnes on the back of that tariff-free window, before India reimposed the 10% duty in March 2025. The global average opened near USD 545/MT in Q1 and finished at USD 596/MT by Q4, a full-year gain of 9.4%. That policy whiplash, together with the record Australian harvest and steady South Asian food processing demand, defined the year's price path.

Chickpeas Prices in India in 2025

India's price firmed from USD 720/MT in Q1 2025 to USD 752/MT by Q4, a gain of 4.4%. The reimposition of the import duty in March 2025, following the brief 2024 tariff-free window, drove much of the year's price recovery. India accounts for roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of global chickpea output, so its own domestic policy decisions carry outsized weight in setting the tone for Kabuli pricing worldwide.

Chickpeas Prices in Mexico in 2025

Mexico's price firmed from USD 615/MT in Q1 2025 to USD 660/MT by Q4, a gain of about 7.3%. Premium large-caliber Kabuli grades held their pricing edge throughout the year. Quality and size distinctions between origins, more than raw supply volume alone, let Mexican product retain a real premium even as multiple competing origins vied for the same export demand.

Chickpeas Prices in Turkey in 2025

Turkey's price firmed from USD 590/MT in Q1 2025 to USD 632/MT by Q4, a gain of 7.1%. Steady Mediterranean and Middle Eastern export demand is what kept the year-long trend going. Turkey's role as one of several competing Kabuli origins means its own pricing tends to track the broader segment closely rather than moving independently.

Chickpeas Prices in Australia in 2025

Australia's price firmed from USD 490/MT in Q1 2025 to USD 551/MT by Q4, a gain of about 12.4%, the steepest domestic move among the tracked markets, driven by the brief 2024 tariff-free export surge into India. That surge reversed sharply once India's duty returned in March 2025, and that reversal, more than any change in Australia's own crop, explains why the annual gain looks large despite growers facing a genuinely difficult second half.

Key Questions Answered in the Report

Mostly food processing and retail dal and flour use, particularly across South Asia, which accounts for most of global demand. The rising plant-protein and snack food trend in North America and Europe, plus animal feed and seed-stock, fill out the remainder.

As of Q2 2026, averages ran USD 833/MT in India, USD 726/MT in Mexico, USD 692/MT in Turkey, and USD 601/MT in Australia. India sits at the top because of the reimposed import duty and rising besan demand.

Consistently higher, quarter after quarter. The global average moved from USD 596/MT in Q4 2025 to USD 615/MT in Q1 2026, then to USD 648/MT in Q2, a 5.4% gain, driven by tightening Indian stocks and rising besan demand.

India had suspended the tariff in May 2024, and Australian exports surged to around 1.4 million tonnes during that window. Concern over the impact on domestic growers led India to reimpose the 10% duty in March 2025, a policy shift that has shaped global Kabuli pricing ever since.

Somewhere between USD 640 and 705/MT globally, based on the near-term trend. India's tariff policy and tight stocks support that firmness for now, though the record Australian crop clearing to market later in H2 could ease prices meaningfully.

India sits well above the rest, a combination of the reimposed import duty and rising besan demand, while Mexico and Turkey trail behind carrying a premium tied to their large-caliber Kabuli grades. Australia prices lowest given its record crop and a currency that keeps its exports more expensive in dollar terms than the price alone suggests.

Updates go out monthly, and our team can help with real-time figures on request.

India's domestic crop size and tariff policy sit at the top of the list, simply because of how large India's share of global production and consumption is. Layer on the Australian harvest volume, currency swings, and the Kabuli-versus-desi split, and short-term volatility can pick up fast.

India dominates production, accounting for roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of global output. Australia, Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico, and Canada fill out the rest of the picture, especially on the export side. Any shift in Indian tariff policy or crop size shows up in every other regional market almost immediately.

Most procurement teams time their purchasing around the Indian tariff policy cycle and the Australian harvest calendar using quarterly trends and forecasts. Currency movements affecting Australian export pricing are worth watching closely, since they offer an early read on the market, and buyers who move on supply commitments before a policy announcement lands tend to fare better than those who wait.
