Italy paid the most for Crottin de Chavignol in Q3 2026: EUR 17.20/KG, up 1.4% from EUR 16.96/KG in Q2. Import costs, cold chain costs and strong demand from restaurants and delicatessens keep Italian prices above the other three markets. Worldwide, the average rose 1.3% to EUR 16.00/KG from EUR 15.79/KG, mostly because higher goat milk prices and stronger demand from retailers and restaurants led producers, importers and wholesalers to raise prices in all four markets. What about Q4 2026? We expect a global average somewhere in the EUR 15.60-16.88/KG range, with goat milk prices, ripening time, holiday season demand and demand from restaurants and delicatessens doing most of the work.
Crottin de Chavignol is a small, round goat cheese from the village of Chavignol in the Loire valley of central France, made under a protected designation of origin. It is eaten young and soft or aged until dry and firm, and it is often served warm on salads. Prices in this report refer to wholesale crottin and are quoted per kilogram. They depend on goat milk prices, ripening time and demand from retailers and restaurants.
Production is limited to the area around Sancerre and nearby villages, and it is made by farms and small dairies from raw or pasteurized goat milk. Goat milk is seasonal and supply peaks in spring and summer, so aged cheese is held for sale in the autumn and winter. France is the largest market, followed by Belgium, Germany and Italy.
Prices should rise modestly through the rest of 2026. Goat milk prices are firm, holiday season demand is strong and stocks of aged cheese are tight. Limits on production under the designation keep supply stable. Against EUR 15.34/KG in Q3 2025, the current global average of EUR 16.00/KG represents an increase of 4.3%.
The risks for Q4 are balanced, with no clear tilt either way. What could push prices higher? Higher goat milk prices, tight stocks of aged cheese or stronger holiday demand would lift prices. What could pull them lower? Lower goat milk prices, larger stocks or weaker demand from restaurants would lower prices.
