The global market for aquaculture is expected to be driven by the growing global population’s demand for fish protein and seafood. Other factors likely to contribute to market growth include shifts in dietary preferences and advancements in aquaculture technology. North America, Europe and Asia are expected to be key markets.
Aquaculture refers to the practice of breeding, rearing and harvesting of fish, algae, shellfish, and other creatures in water environments. With growing global population and resultant increase in demand for food (including seafood), efforts have been made to make technological advancements that enable production of food in coastal marine waters and open oceans. Aquaculture offers a way to produce food along with other marketable products, re-establish habitats, restore wild stocks, and rebuild populations of species under threat. Aquaculture is practiced across the globe in coastal ocean waters, freshwater ponds and rivers, and even in tanks on land. Aquaculture is seen as a means to filling the gap of seafood supply; responsible and sustainable fish farming is considered a viable solution to the problem of providing future generations healthy and environmentally friendly protein alternatives.
By type, aquaculture may be divided into two broad types - marine and freshwater. In the USA, marine aquaculture begets several species such as oysters, clams, mussels, shrimp, seaweeds, and fish like salmon, black sea bass, sablefish, yellowtail, and pompano. Catfish and trout are notable species produced through freshwater aquaculture in USA. Asia is a major aquaculture producer in the world. Further, aquaculture in Asia is significantly more diverse as compared to other regions with respect to production systems and cultivated species. Majority of countries known for diversity of aquaculture species are in Asia, China being a major player.
Approximately 580 aquatic species are farmed globally, with aquaculture being practiced by poor farmers in developing countries as well as multinational firms in developed nations. While eating fish is part of tradition and culture in several countries, it offers numerous health benefits. Fish are a significant source of protein, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and essential micronutrients. Aquaculture also provides importance resources such as seaweed. A significantly large portion of aquaculture production comprises creatures falling low in the food chain, such as mollusks, herbivorous and omnivorous fish. According to analyst reports, aquaculture would be a major contributor to the growth of the fisheries sector in future. However, there is significant emphasis on managing the environmental aspects of the practice of aquaculture and ensuring that the practice develops while remaining sustainable.
As compared to other farming alternatives, aquaculture is a sustainable practice. Seafood offers high protein retention as compared to chicken, pork and beef, and has the lowest feed conversion ratio among identical protein forms. Also, as against other farming practices, aquaculture shows lower greenhouse gas emissions. With growing global population, the demand for animal protein is expected to increase significantly. Emphasis on finding sustainable methods of providing healthy food to the world population is increasing, and under these circumstances, sustainable aquaculture emerges as a good solution. These factors are expected to contribute to market growth.
