Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spine and trunk malformation that comprises lateral deviation, rotation, and a sagittal profile disturbance. Scoliosis treatment is recommended because scoliosis can have significant repercussions for certain patients' quality of life and other health conditions. Several factors may cause scoliosis, including disturbances of the neuromuscular system (neuromuscular scoliosis), changes in soft tissue, nervous system changes (neurofibromatosis), failures in the formation/segmentation of the vertebrae and ribs (congenital scoliosis), and more.
Possible causes of scoliosis include neuromuscular conditions, congenital scoliosis, specific genes, unequal leg length, syndromic scoliosis, osteoporosis, poor posture, carrying backpacks or satchels, connective tissue disorders, and injuries.
The majority of scoliosis patients have idiopathic scoliosis, and rarely, early onset scoliosis (EOS). Late-onset idiopathic scoliosis, commonly known as adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), affects eighty to ninety percent of scoliosis patients. Untreated symptomatic or syndromic scoliosis, and EOS, can lead to serious health problems and an increased risk of death. AIS, the most prevalent form of scoliosis, is a comparatively benign condition that normally does not cause serious health problems or premature death.
Causes of scoliosis include congenital, neuromuscular, syndrome-related, idiopathic, and secondary causes of spine curvature. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis seen by general practitioners. Commonly, childhood and adolescent scoliosis is not severe and does not warrant treatment. However, regular check-ups at three, six, or twelve month intervals may be required to monitor the condition. If the curve falls between twenty-five to forty degrees, bracing may be recommended. If the curve is greater and the skeleton immature, surgery may be recommended. In infantile scoliosis, plaster casting instead of bracing may be employed by the doctor to enable the infant’s spine grow into a characteristic position.
If an individual has moderate scoliosis and the bones are growing, the individual may be recommended a brace. While the brace does not cure or reverse scoliosis, it helps prevent further curvature. The brace is no longer required once the bones stop growing.
Chiropractic treatment and exercises are other measures adopted by individuals to manage scoliosis. Surgery is recommended only if benefits outweigh the risks.
