Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a technology that has been recognized as very effective in significantly lowering nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from combustion sources in power plants, marine vessels, and heavy-duty diesel engines. Even though the main SCR reagent is an ammonia source, aqueous urea solutions like Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) are used frequently in mobile applications. These chemicals are obtained as part of strategies to comply with strict air quality standards rather than being commodity chemical trades.
In February 2025, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) implemented revised Tier III emission standards for NOx, in designated Emission Control Areas (ECAs). This has made it mandatory for ship operators to use SCR systems along with the appropriate reagents. The regulatory clarity has expanded the demand for DEF and other high purity SCR chemicals in the marine fuel additives market. This regulatory milestone sped up the ordering patterns of shipping companies that are concerned about meeting the compliance deadline.
From the industrial perspective, BASF in October 2024, communicated further technical assistance for SCR reagent performance, with the release of its full portfolio of selective catalytic reduction additives for power generation and large industrial engines. BASF highlighted the SCR reagent quality and consistency as major factors in achieving reliable catalyst performance and longevity of the catalyst, indicating that suppliers are now viewing emission control solutions as a performance, critical component rather than generic chemical inputs.
Johnson Matthey launched a comparable innovation in June 2024 when it pointed out the signing up of SCR catalysts and reagent integration services by heavy, duty vehicle OEMs in Europe. The company emphasized that a well-regulated delivery of the reagent as well as compatibility with the catalyst are very important factors for making NOx reduction a reality outside of the lab, especially in the case of commercial vehicles where the requirements of the authorities and the necessity to save fuel come at the same time.
These advancements indicate that SCR chemicals and emission control reagents represent a part of industrial and transport emission strategies and thus they facilitate both regulatory compliance and uninterrupted operations.

Tightening emission standards in different parts of the world are the main reason for increased use of SCR chemicals. In marine and heavy transport sectors, the regulatory bodies like IMO and the European Union continuously develop more stringent rules on NOx and particulate matter emissions, thus, fleet operators have to make investments in high-performance SCR systems and compliant reagent supply chains.
For the power generation sector, North America and East Asia, that is, have changed their air quality regulations to lower NOx emissions from industrial boilers and turbines. The standards therefore increase the dependence on SCR systems together with high-quality reagents to fulfill permit requirements and avoid regulatory fines.
Integration of reagent quality assurance with catalyst performance analytics is another trend. The suppliers like BASF and Johnson Matthey make reagent purity, dosing control, and system integration part of the value propositions that go beyond a basic reagent chemical. This is in line with the industry's need for reliable performance and long catalyst life, thus decreasing the total cost of ownership of the emission control systems.
Supply chain dynamics also shape this subsegment. The DEF supply chain, which includes production, certification, and distribution logistics, must align with just in time fueling paradigms in the automotive and marine sectors. Automated replenishment contracts and bulk reagent storage solutions are increasingly used by fleet operators to minimize operational disruption.
However, there are still certain issues where the risks of reagent contamination, for example, may cause the catalyst performance to deteriorate and create operational problems. Therefore, the major OEMs and equipment operators establish very strict quality standards where they not only require certified reagent sources but also traceability documentation.
Unstable prices of feedstock, especially ammonia and refined urea derivatives, can also lead to fluctuations in the cost of reagents. SCR chemical formulation producers are thus turning to supply chain risk management and backward integration to be able to offer stable pricing under long term contracts.
Besides, system complexity and maintenance requirements are considered to be the limiting factors as well. SCR systems need to have very accurate reagent dosing, have catalysts in optimal condition, and to be regularly checked if they are still capable of delivering the required NOx reductions. Suppliers, therefore, are adding a service element to their long-term reagent supply and maintenance contracts.
In spite of these barriers, SCR chemicals and emission control reagents are still indispensable for regulated industries under environmental compliance. Ones that offer a blend of high purity chemical reagents, system integration support, and QA frameworks are the vendors who will be able to meet the continuously growing demand.
