Press Release
Increasing worldwide population, shrinking arable land, and rising demand for food are expected to boost the global agricultural adjuvants market. North America, Europe, Asia, and parts of Oceania (such as New Zealand and Australia) are likely to be key markets. The activator adjuvant segment is likely to drive the market. Nonionic surfactants are likely to be the most demanded surfactant type.
Adjuvants are substances added to herbicide solutions to enhance spray mixture performance. Examples of adjuvants include compatibility agents, drift retardants, suspension aids, spray buffers and surfactants. Surfactants (surface active agents) refer to a type of adjuvants designed to enhance the dispersing, emulsifying, absorbing, spreading, and sticking properties of the spray mixture.
Several leading companies are engaged in the production of adjuvants to enhance penetration and performance of agricultural chemicals, micronutrients and fertilizers. For example, in 2022, Corteva Agriscience announced a new, above-ground nitrogen stabilizer – PinnitMax TG – that ensured that nitrogen reached plant root zones by protecting urea and UAN applications from vapourization for up to 14 days. PinnitMax TG nitrogen stabilizer also offered other benefits including straightforward blending, free-flowing applications, and easy cleanup, speeding up labour and processing time for customers for optimization of operations.
In 2022, Farmers Business Network (FBN) launched a new line of adjuvants and crop nutrition products under its new private label brand, “Farmers First”. FBN sought to invest in improving their product quality to compete with other high-quality adjuvants present in the market.
In 2022, Winfield United introduced new UltraLock adjuvant (an all-purpose drift and deposition aid) to combat herbicide resistance, enhance herbicide drift prevention and help growers attain superior weed control.
In 2019, research from the WinField United Innovation Center explained how small particle drift could be minimized by using tank mix products that reduced the chances of off-target applications. Researchers came to the conclusion that even the inclusion of a drift reduction adjuvant (DRA) in the spray tank created flexible, bubble-like membranes called “bags” which broke after leaving the spray nozzle and hitting a crosswind in the field, resulting in many small droplets drifted away. The phenomenon was called “bag breakup”. It was further found that using adjuvants like WinField’s InterLock disrupted the formation of these flexible bags, minimizing bag breakup.
In 2020, Ingevity launched a new multifunctional, bio-based adjuvant line for crop protection, featuring AltaHance™ retention technology. AltaHance was designed to be used in crop protection products to increase the efficacy of the agrochemical.
Hydravance 200, a sophisticated soil adjuvant by Croda, improves penetration of water into hydrophobic soil, increasing wetting and percolation of water throughout the soil profile. Better penetration into the root zone and even distribution of the treatment makes the application more effective. Further, the product helps retain moisture within the soil, keeping agrochemical treatments in solution for longer periods of time, fostering seed and plant development and enhancing treatment bioavailability. The product thus helps increase crop yield while minimizing negative effects on the environment.
