The usage of aluminium sulphate in water treatment is projected to drive global demand for the material. The aluminium sulphate industry is also likely to be boosted by applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
Aluminium sulfate, Al2(SO4)3, is a non-toxic, non-combustible, water-soluble (insoluble in ethanol), odourless, white crystalline chemical compound with a sweet, mildly astringent taste. Aluminium sulfate is produced by reacting freshly precipitated aluminium hydroxide with a proper amount of sulfuric acid. It may appear in the form of white, lustrous crystals, granules, pieces, or powder.
In municipal drinking water and wastewater treatment systems, iron-free aluminium sulphate (alum) is widely employed. In potable water applications, alum works well as a principal coagulant. Alum decreases turbidity, suspended particles, total organic carbon (TOC), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in raw water through charge neutralisation and flocculation. Aluminium sulphate quickly hydrolyzes to form insoluble precipitates, aiding in the removal of minute particles that are difficult to filter and/or too small to settle by gravity.
Food applications of aluminium sulfate include remineralization and clarification of water for soft drinks and beer, controlling pH levels in beets, tomatoes, and other vegetables, purification of sugar beet juices, controlling pH and colour in wine and liquor, leavening agent in cake mix (baking soda), and curdling and thickening cheese.
Aluminium sulfate also has pharmaceutical applications. Solutions with 5 to 10% aluminium sulfate have been used as local applications to treat ulcers and stop foul discharge from mucous surfaces. Further, aluminium sulfate is used to prepare aluminium acetate ear drops. As a solid stick or powder, it is used on minor cuts and abrasions after shaving. Aluminium sulfate is also employed as vaccine adjuvant, and used as a deodorant and an astringent. It has been reported to show anti-microbial activity.
North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are estimated to be key markets.
Other industrial uses of aluminium sulfate include fabric dyeing (mordant in the organic dyeing process to enable dye absorption in textiles), paper manufacturing (sizing agent, charge neutralization, pitch control), algae control in ponds, lakes and waterways, soil pH control (being an acidic compound, aluminium sulfate is used to adjust the pH level in basic soil), product manufacturing (firefighting foam, deodorant, baking soda, leather making, fertilizers, soaps, drugs, and chemical catalysts).
