New construction projects are expected to fuel the global asphalt additives market. Demand for bitumen/asphalt additives is expected to rise further as traffic volumes rise and more focus is placed on ecologically friendly infrastructure building methods. The primary markets are expected to be North America, Europe, and Asia.
In 2020, key asphalt producers were Germany, France and Turkey. Reclaimed asphalt was used significantly across Europe (including Germany, France, Great Britain, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, and Finland, among others) for road development/building projects. Recent years have witnessed an increase in the production of warm mix asphalt (WMA). Additives are employed to enhance the performance of asphalt mixtures; organic compounds as amide waxes, montan waxes, low Fischer-Tropsch (FT) paraffin, and zeolites are used as additives in WMA.
The introduction of WMA and associated technologies was an outcome of increased focused on decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. WMA technologies helped lower greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing the mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt mix. Adding liquid warm mix additives to the binder is a commonly accepted practice in WMA manufacture, and offers advantages such as less energy consumption and emissions, better allowable haul distances, and enhanced workability and compaction during construction. The Anova warm mix additive (introduced in Australia by a joint effort between Cargill and Puma Bitumen) is a bio-based oil; it is non-toxic and non-corrosive. Cargill’s Anova product line has had a good record, particularly in the USA where nearly 20 states have approved its use. Test results demonstrate that decrease in temperature accomplished using Anova was similar to that achieved with the use of wax or amine based warm mix additives. In 2016, Cargill announced the national release of WinterPave® asphalt anti-freeze - a proprietary additive that offered conventional asphalt anti-icing properties when directly added to the product during production. The additive enabled safer winter roads, and was environmentally friendly as it released lesser chlorides as against conventional methods.

Constant efforts are being made to test materials and come with solutions to enhance performance. For example, in 2020, a study by Plastics Industry Association and NCAT indicated that using asphalt formulations with recycled polyethylene (rPE) film (as polymer additives) recovered from retail locations could offer several benefits as those provided by conventional polymer-modified asphalt formulations.
In 2019, a study identified polymer additives that increased the storage stability of asphalt rubber. The study by American Chemical Society found that when mixed with asphalt, mixtures of recycled tire rubber (RTR) with trans-isoprene or polybutadiene gave superior performance. The mixtures decreased RTR density. Further, the polymers decreased asphalt rubber viscosity and made the material easy to handle.
In 2020, it was reported that graphene-enhanced roads were tested in UK. Gipave - a polymeric supermodifier containing graphene and a selected type of hard plastic – was used in the asphalt. It was stated that the Gipave additive enhanced pavement could exhibit significant durability.
Such innovations are expected to stimulate the market.
