Global Automotive Brake Caliper Market to Grow at a CAGR of 3.70% During the Period 2024-2032, Driven by Increased Use of Disc Brake Systems

Global Automotive Brake Caliper Market

According to a new report by EMR titled, ‘Global Automotive Brake Caliper Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032’, the global automotive brake caliper market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.70% during the period 2024-2032, led by increasing number of vehicles with disc brake systems.

The increased use of disc braking systems in vehicles is likely to drive the global market for automotive brake calipers. The primary markets are expected to be North America, Europe, and Asia.

Brake calipers are a component of a vehicle’s disc braking system and contain brake pads and pistons. Brake calipers create friction with the brake rotors to slow down the vehicle’s wheels. Each caliper contains a set of metal plates called brake pads. When pressure is applied on the brake pedal, the brake fluid exerts pressure on the pistons in the brake caliper, forcing the pads against the rotor to slow down the vehicle.

Brake calipers are of two main types - fixed and floating. Fixed calipers are generally heavy, large and powerful. Fixed calipers do not move, but have pistons on either side that move to squeeze the rotor during braking action. Pistons on fixed calipers generally come in pairs and may range from two to eight (higher number of pistons are used in heavy or high-speed vehicles). Floating calipers, on the other hand, are relatively light and compact, and less powerful than fixed calipers. These calipers slide on lubricated bushings and pins, and carry pistons on the inside of the brake disc.

Several leading companies provide braking components and solutions for popular vehicles. For example, Goodyear Brakes (a licensee of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company), offers premium quality brake bundles, calipers, rotors, brake pads and other hardware for popular vehicles, including light trucks and SUVs. Calipers for the company are remanufactured in North America (using less energy and raw material), with most of the production process returning to USA.

With the TRW Electric Park Brake (EPB) becoming standard equipment in majority of vehicle categories, aftermarket demand has increased. Nevertheless, car owners seek an economical alternate solution to replacing the EPB brake caliper entirely. In 2021, ZF Aftermarket's TRW brand announced a solution with a new actuator repair kit. The kit contains brake calipers available in the same colours as those in the original equipment (OE), such as black, red, grey and ultramarine. Additionally, certain vehicle producers employ attractive colour designs for the Electric Park Brake as well as the caliper of the service brake. ZF Aftermarket offers a broad range of coloured brake calipers that can be used in vehicle models from Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Peugeot and Land Rover.

With an increase in the number of environmentally friendly vehicles (such as electric vehicles) and increasing regulations on internal combustion engines, there is growing emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly solutions, including braking systems. Companies are looking to offer solutions that are friendlier to the environment. For example, in 2018, Akebono developed the world's first "new construction brake calipers that were based on the construction of the existing product - the AD-Type disc brake - and had been comprehensively modified to fulfil particular requirements for automobiles that employed electric power sources. The solution was friendlier to the global environment, and used aluminium as material which gave a weight reduction of up to thirty percent.

In 2021, Akebono Brake Industry Co., Ltd. announced that its products had been adopted by Lynk & Co, a premium automotive brand owned by Geely Auto Group in China, for one of its vehicles. Akebono would supply four-pot disc brake calipers and copper-free disc brake pads for the front wheels of the 05+ model, a high-performance SUV.

In 2020, Continental announced the expansion of its product range for repairs of electric parking brakes in the independent aftermarket. The company’s preassembled unit, comprising a brake caliper and motor in OEM quality, sought to simplify repairs of electric parking brakes. Workshops and dealers could order both motors and preassembled caliper-motor units as original ATE parts. Brake calipers were also available in matt black, tornado red and ultramarine blue.
