Applications in sectors such as aluminium, steel, and titanium dioxide are likely to boost the global market for calcined petroleum coke. Other industrial applications include brick and glass, paper and fertilizer. North America, Europe, and Asia are projected to be major markets. The United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, and Germany were the major exporters of calcined petroleum coke in 2019, while India, China, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates were the top importers. In India, increased demand for aluminium across businesses is expected to drive the demand for calcined petroleum coke.
Calcined petroleum coke is required in the production of anodes for smelting. Presently, no known commercially feasible substitute exists for calcined petroleum coke in the production and use of aluminium smelter anodes. Calcined petroleum coke exhibits a superior combination of electrical conductivity and resistance to chemical and physical degradation in the smelting pot with lower contaminant levels.
Calcined petroleum coke is used to make titanium dioxide (TiO2), a mineral that is utilised as an alternative to lead in paint. Titanium dioxide is also employed as a pigment in sunscreen, plastic, and food colouring.
In the steel industry, calcined petroleum coke can be used as a partial replacement for metallurgical coal in coke oven batteries, and as a partial replacement for pulverised coal put directly into blast furnaces.
Needle coke is petroleum coke that has been carefully created to have a needle-like crystal structure. Electrodes for electric arc furnace (EAF) steel manufacturing are made from needle coke. No other material offers the electrical conductivity and physical qualities required for EAF electrodes like needle coke.
Calcined petroleum coke is employed by brick and glass producers as it has a considerably lower ash content as compared to other fuels.
In the paper industry, calcined petroleum coke is gasified to produce ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate, which are used to manufacture pulp and paper. The titanium dioxide produced from calcined petroleum coke is utilized as a whitener for paper.
In the fertilizer industry, ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate produced from the gasification of calcined petroleum coke are used in the production of fertilizer.
