Global Cellulose Market to Grow at a CAGR of 4.1% During the Period 2024-2032, Driven by Multiple Applications Across Sectors

Global Cellulose Market

According to a new report by EMR titled, ‘Global Cellulose Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032’, the global cellulose market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.1% during the period 2024-2032, led by uses in sectors including paper, pharmaceuticals, food and textiles.

Cellulose holds a lot of commercial importance. Cellulose is used several food components, industrial raw materials and household items. For example, cellulose offers raw material for the manufacturing of paper, cellophane, celluloid and rayon, including different kinds of plastic. Cellulose derivatives (like cellulose nitrate) are used to manufacture films, lacquers and explosives. Cellulose is almost pure cotton and warrants very little treatment before being employed in the production of fabrics and other useful materials. Cellulose based materials have several applications in thermo-reversible and tenable hydrogels, coating additives, paper making, flexible screens, food packaging, optically transparent films and lightweight materials for ballistic protection, automobile windows, etc. North America, Europe and Asia are expected to be key markets.

The key commercial use for cellulose is paper production; here, kraft process is employed to separate cellulose from lignin. Cellulose fibres are also employed in the textile industry. Cotton, linen, and other natural fibres may be employed directly or processed to make rayon. Powdered cellulose and microcrystalline cellulose are utilised as drug fillers and food thickeners, stabilizers, and emulsifiers. Cellulose is employed by scientists in liquid filtration and thin layer chromatography. Cellulose is also used as building material and electrical insulator. Household items like glues, coffee filters, sponges, laxatives, eye drops, and films contain cellulose. Cellulose from plants is an important fuel; cellulose from animal waste may also be processed to produce butanol biofuel. These applications are expected to boost the global cellulose market.

Wood pulp (a form of cellulose) is chiefly obtained from spruce. To prepare cellulose, the first step is to separate lignin and other non-cellulose materials. This is achieved by treating wood pulp at high temperature and pressure with sulphur dioxide and calcium bisulphite. The purified pulp thus extracted contains up to 97% pure cellulose; it is then dissolved to generate cellulose as synthetic fibres or sheets. This regenerated cellulose possesses significant tensile strength and multiple protective properties, making it suitable for wrapping purposes; rayon, a stronger material, is used to manufacture industrial belts and tyre cords.

Important cellulose derivatives include celluloid, cellophane, rayon, cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, nitrocellulose, methylcellulose, cellulose sulphate, ethulose, ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, and carboxymethyl cellulose (cellulose gum).

Amid rising environmental concerns, companies are looking to develop and offer sustainable solutions. For example, in 2022, Eastman, producer of sustainably sourced NaiaTM cellulosic fibre, received further scientific evidence that the cellulose diacetate (CDA)-based material disintegrated and biodegraded in the ocean within months. CDA is chiefly derived from wood pulp, making it biobased. Naia™ cellulosic fibre was sourced from sustainably managed pine and eucalyptus forests, and manufactured in a safe, closed-loop process where solvents were recycled back into the system for reuse. In 2020, Eastman announced the expansion of its Naia™ fiber portfolio; with the introduction of a new cellulosic staple fibre, Naia™ offered an eco-conscious material choice for sustainable fashion. Such innovative and sustainable solutions are expected to help growth of global cellulose market.
