Global Centrifugal Chillers Market to Grow at a CAGR of 4.7% During the Period 2024-2032, Driven by Demand for Energy-efficient and Environmentally-friendly Solutions

Global Centrifugal Chillers Market

According to a new report by EMR titled, ‘Global Centrifugal Chillers Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032’, the global centrifugal chillers market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.7% during the period 2024-2032, led by uses across sectors.

The global centrifugal chillers market is expected to be driven by uses of centrifugal chillers in HVAC systems. North America, Europe, Middle East and Asia are expected to be key markets. Chillers form part of the central air-conditioning system, and have significant demand in different market segments, both commercial (hotels, hospitals, malls, airports and IT facilities) as well as industrial applications (pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textile, chemical and FMCG). Centrifugal chillers are widely used in North America as  the building stock in that region comprises large buildings for a good portion; Europe and Middle East are also significant markets where centrifugal chillers are mainly used for hotels, commercial buildings, industrial plants, university campuses, airports and hospitals. Energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly products are likely to drive market growth.

Centrifugal chillers are reliable vapor compression cycle chillers suited to medium to large scale cooling operations (150 – 6000 tons of refrigeration). These comprise evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion device set-up along with additional rotating impellers which compress the refrigerant and carry it around the system.

Leading companies are engaged in developing advanced solutions. For example, in 2021, YORK® YZ Magnetic Bearing Centrifugal Chiller by Johnson Controls won a 2021 CRH Innovation Award at the 2021 China Refrigeration Exhibition at Shanghai New International Expo Center. The company claimed that with its environmentally-friendly and efficient design, the YZ Chiller highlighted the company’s goals to offer sustainable and cutting-edge chiller solutions for its customers. In 2019, Johnson Controls extended the capacity range of its YORK® YZ Magnetic Bearing Centrifugal Chiller to include chillers beyond 1,000 tons (3,516 kW), up to 1,350 tons (4747 kW) of refrigeration. The technology employed in the next generation chillers required 80 percent lesser moving parts than conventional oil or refrigerant-lubricated drivelines. This resulted in improved reliability, decreased maintenance and improved efficiency. Such solutions are expected to boost global centrifugal chillers market growth.

In 2019, Kirloskar Group launched a series of chillers with India’s first oil free magnetic bearing centrifugal compressor centrifugal compressor to take a step towards sustainable development. With technical skill to devise and build compressors employing magnetic levitation technology, Kirloskar Chillers joined a handful of manufacturers across the globe capable of offering this technology. This technology promised to dominate rotating equipment, in general and chillers in particular, over the next few decades.

In 2021, Carrier unveiled its innovative new AquaEdge® 19MV oil-free water-cooled centrifugal chiller devised to deliver dependable performance, enhanced efficiency, easy installation and a broad operating range. The solution, with capacity from 300 to 700 tons (1,055kW – 2,461kW), combined best-in-segment efficiency for design and the capability to function at severe conditions due to unexpected building operation or extreme weather. In 2020, Carrier announced that it had extended its AquaEdge® 19DV water-cooled centrifugal chiller capacity range in North America by 150 tons. With the new capacity range beginning at 350 tons (earlier 500-tons), the 19DV could address customer requirements of smaller applications. Such innovative solutions are expected to contribute to growth of global centrifugal chillers market.

In 2019, Daikin relaunched the DWSC/DWDC range in B vintage, building on the success of its centrifugal compressor water cooled chiller. The next generation water cooled chiller incorporated new features, including a new Inverter drive design, unique to Daikin, and the low GWP R-513A refrigerant version.

In 2017, Haier Central Air-Conditioning launched its magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller unit with the world's largest cooling capacity, 4200RT, at the 28th China Refrigeration Exhibition in Shanghai New International Expo Center. One unit could cool a 100,000-square-meter space.
