The global dicyclopentadiene market is expected to be driven applications in a broad range of specialty products, including polyester resins, paints, adhesives, coatings, inks, varnishes, and other specialty chemicals. The Far East region is a major market for dicyclopentadiene, apart from Europe and North America. The demand is expected to significantly increase in Europe, USA and Asian markets during the forecast period.
Dicyclopentadiene is used in the production of cyclopentadiene as a pesticide intermediate; in the manufacture of ferrocene compounds, paints, varnishes, resin, elastomers, resin systems, flame retardants for plastics, and polymers.
Dicyclopentadiene is used as repellent (in summer or winter) for animals including hares, rabbits, and deer. It is applied as impregnated strip on deciduous and coniferous trees, or as spray around ornamental plants and shrubs.
The two broad categories of industrial end uses of cyclopentadiene and dicyclopentadiene include: commodity resins and polymers [which comprise hydrocarbon resins, unsaturated polyester resins, and ethylene propylene diene rubbers (EPDM]; and specialty polymers and fine chemicals (which comprise cyclic olefin copolymers, flame retardants, agrochemicals, specialty norbornenes, flavour and fragrance intermediates).
In recent years, low carbon footprint has become a major area of concern across technologies, and decreasing energy consumption based on fossil fuels has come to be an important criterion in several industrial sectors. As compared to other curable resins (epoxy, phenolic, melamine-formaldehyde, polyurethane, and polyimide) employed in composite structures, unsaturated polyesters (UPs) offer an easier alternative to be self-healed and recycled using strong transesterification catalysts in final cured resins. Unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs), being a significant class of resins for thermosets, are a solution of linear or weakly branched UPs in reactive solvents, predominantly styrene.
UPR formulation may be modified for using pyrolysis products from polymeric waste, or hitherto unusable by-products from fuel/crude oil distillations. A well-recognized modification of UPR formulation is the dicyclopentadiene modification.
Dicyclopentadiene modified UPRs are generally used in low demanding applications, such as hulls, decks, and bathroom facilities. Key advantages of these polymers over orthophthalic or isophthalic polyesters are comparatively low shrinking, decreased styrene emission, lesser cost, and fast curing in thin layers.
Dicyclopentadiene resin is characterized by low viscosity and resistance to heat, impact, and corrosive chemicals when compared to thermoplastic resins used in standard injection moulding. The result is large, strong, and lightweight products. It is a popular choice for protective coverings like shields, hoods, and exterior bodies of cars, trucks and machinery. Dicyclopentadiene reaction injection moulding enables quick and efficient production of large parts using dicyclopentadiene resin, using a closed mould and a low-moisture, low-oxygen environment.
Dicyclopentadiene reaction injection moulding enables the production of significant size as compared to standard injection moulding. Despite their large size, dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) parts are strong, flexible, and lightweight.
Being light-weight, dicyclopentadiene is environmentally friendly, and used in vehicle bumpers, body panels, spoilers or fenders to make them fuel efficient. Dicyclopentadiene is impact resistant and very strong. It can function exceptionally well after heavy or repeated impacts, in extremely hot temperatures and even after exposure to a variety of chemicals. If it does break, it is readily repairable.
