The global disinfectant robot market is likely to be driven by advanced solutions that decrease human exposure to dangerous microbes. North America, Europe and Asia are likely to be key markets.
Sales of disinfectant robots have witnessed an increase since the COVID-19 outbreak. These robots are being used in hospitals as well as public spaces such as hotels and public transport to keep patients and workers safe. In fact, several food retailers and mall operators have been trialling or using such robots. Amazon tested a UV robot in its Whole Foods Markets, while shopping malls in Singapore use PBA Group’s ‘Sunburst UV Robot’ (which is also used in hospitals in Malaysia and Singapore).
While leading companies are developing technically advanced solutions to help keep people safe from infections, organizations are readily adopting disinfectant robots to be able to face a public health crisis and protect workers and visitors. For example, in 2022, BTECH Robotics launched a mobile disinfectant robot - ADIBOT-A – to fulfil the demand for autonomous cleaning regimes. The robot emitted UV-C (ultraviolet C) rays to remove germs from indoor environments. The robot had an autonomous feature which allowed it to enter restricted spaces and apply the least amount of disinfectant or UV-C time possible to fulfil UVC energy targets.

In 2021, two Slovenian hospitals got two of the first robots acquired by the Commission to disinfect patient rooms to help reduce and contain the spread of coronavirus. 29 other disinfection robots were deployed to hospitals in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Lithuania, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. These robots could disinfect a standard sized patient room in ten minutes using ultraviolet light, and disinfect more than 18 rooms in one charge. Such adoption of robotic solutions is expected to boost the global disinfectant robot market.
In 2020, OMRON Asia Pacific entered the UVC disinfection domain with the launch of its robot – LD UVC. The robot was a co-creation with Techmetics Robotics aimed to enable organisations combat spread of infectious diseases effectively and conveniently. OMRON LD-UVC could navigate autonomously and disinfect premises (including high-touch areas) by eliminating 99.90% of bacteria and viruses – airborne as well as droplet- by administering the exact dose of UVC energy.
In 2021, Ava Launched a UV disinfection robot for the workplace. The company started accepting pre-orders for its newly launched ultraviolet (UV) disinfection robot to manage COVID-19-related and other cleaning needs. Enabling autonomous UV disinfection in workplace environments, including corporate offices, warehouses, and other work spaces, the UV robot featured applications that disinfected air and surfaces; a disinfection rate of approximately 9,000 square feet per hour, with 99% effectiveness against COVID-19; fully autonomous operation and safe navigation; remote access to the robot for facilities managers or other users; emailed reporting, automatically sent to managers, confirming appropriate dosages for assigned areas; integration of screens and speakers for disinfection-related announcements; and easy integration with cleaning best practices and existing protocols.
In 2021, The Government of Rwanda and UNDP launched disinfecting robots to combat the spread of COVID-19 and decrease hospital acquired infections. The three new robots were deployed at Nyarugenge District Hospital, and were cutting-edge Ultra Violet (UV-C) light robots which would help in cleaning and disinfecting treatment centres, hospitals and places of mass gathering such as markets and offices to limit the spread of COVID-19.
In 2020, Blue Ocean Robotics announced that it had been included in Robotics Business Review’s list of the 50 most influential robotics companies in the world (RBR50) for its UVD Robots. The recognition was received for the work with UVD Robots based on the health benefits of its technology as well as continued rising demand for its safe disinfecting capabilities. Such efforts are likely to stimulate the global disinfectant robot market.
In 2020, Xenex awarded an exclusive $20 million contract to astronics for manufacturing support of LightStrike disinfecting robots. Xenex’s patented pulsed xenon ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection technology was proven to accomplish a 99.99% level of disinfection against SARS-CoV-2, in two minutes.
