Global Helicopter Flight Management System Market to Grow at a CAGR of 2.9% During the Period 2024-2032, Driven by Demand for Solutions Offering Increased Flight Safety and Mission Efficiency

Global Helicopter Flight Management System Market

According to a new report by EMR titled, ‘Global Helicopter Flight Management System Market Report and Forecast 2024-2032’, the global helicopter flight management system market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.9% during the period 2024-2032, led by advancements in technology.

The global helicopter flight management system market is likely to be driven by demand for advanced flight management systems designed for commercial, paramilitary and military helicopter applications. Technologically advanced solutions with uses in multiple applications, solutions enhancing mission effectiveness and flight safety, and the need to upgrade military helicopters to meet novel challenges and threats are expected to stimulate the market. North America, Europe and Asia are expected to be key markets. Modern solutions that are compact, single box and civil-certified, and provide flexible, reliable and responsive flight and radio management solutions that comply with the requirements of civil airspace navigation, and offer unique mission capabilities are likely to drive the market. Cost-effective digital flight control solutions offer greater stability, efficiency and safety enhancements to helicopters.

A flight management system (FMS) is an on-board multi-purpose navigation, performance, and aircraft operations computer devised to offer virtual data and operational harmony between closed and open elements related to a flight from pre-engine start and take-off, to landing and engine shut-down. A flight management system comprises four key elements – Flight Management Computer (FMC), Automatic Flight Control or Automatic Flight Guidance System (AFCS or AFGS); Aircraft Navigation System; Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) or comparable electromechanical instrumentation.

In 2021, Garmin® International, Inc., announced that the GFC™ 600H flight control system obtained Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for setting up on the Bell 505 helicopter, offering an economical flight control solution that reduced pilot workload and enhanced mission effectiveness. The GFC 600H offered several helicopter-tailored safety features, such as altitude hold with speed stability, the state-of-the-art hover assist mode, Garmin Helicopter Electronic Stability and Protection (H-ESP™), return-to-level (LVL) mode, overspeed and low-speed protection, and others.

In 2022, Garmin announced that Supplemental Type Certification (STC) by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the GI 275 electronic flight instrument in Part 27 VFR helicopters was likely to see completion in March. GI 275 was a scalable, cost-conscious method to an avionics advancement that would be a direct replacement for multiple legacy primary flight instruments in the cockpit. Such solutions are likely to drive the global helicopter flight management system market.

In 2019, Airbus Helicopters and the French defence procurement agency (DGA) selected the FlytX avionics suite for their future H160M Joint Light Helicopter. Airbus Helicopters and Thales were also pursuing studies to possibly integrate FlytX on the future Tiger Mk3. Employing the latest display technologies to make flying easier, FlytX featured a set of naturally intuitive, direct-interaction touchscreen interfaces. The flight deck solution helped reduce workload, allowing pilots to focus on their missions and ensure optimal safety.

In 2018, Universal Avionics received FAA Technical Standard Order (TSO) authorization for the company's novel Flight Management System (FMS)/Multi-Missions Management System (MMMS) software version SCN 1002.0/1102.0. The software offered helicopter operators the advantage of Localizer Performance (LP) Level of Service (LOS) approaches and a Transition to Hover search pattern.

In 2022, Safran announced that it would provide engines and other equipment on H160M and H160 helicopters for the French armed forces and Gendarmerie. Safran would also supply various high-performance flight control systems, including smart electromechanical actuators (SEMA) and trim actuators, along with cockpit components and windshield wiper systems, and electrical distribution.

Key Findings of the Report:

  • The need for solutions ensuring better flight safety and mission efficiency is expected to drive the global helicopter flight management system market.
  • Technical advancements are likely to help market growth.
  • North America, Europe and Asia are projected to be key markets.
