The rising number of instances linked with prostate-related diseases and disorders is expected to drive the worldwide prostate stents market. Prostatitis (usually bacterial inflammation), enlarged prostate (BPH) or benign prostatic hyperplasia, and prostate cancer, are dominant concerns. BPH is the most prevalent cause of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in males over the age of 50; after the age of 40, the likelihood of BPH increases.
A prostatic stent is a small device placed to open up the urethra and improve urine flow and emptying of the bladder. Stents are used widely in endoscopic urological processes.
Several companies seek to offer effective solutions for prostate related disorders. In 2016, SRS Medical Systems announced that the company secured CE Mark approval in the European Union for its Spanner temporary prostatic stent, devised to be used as an indwelling Foley catheter as well as an intermittent urinary catheter in male patients. The blind, anaesthesia-free implantation procedure was like that of a Foley catheter. The Spanner comprises a small balloon near the tip which stays within the bladder. The balloon keeps The Spanner in place while the tube enables urine flow from the bladder through the part of the urethra blocked by the enlarged prostate gland; it keeps the urethra open despite the prostate exerting pressure on it. A retrieval string attached to The Spanner, and is employed to drain the balloon when it is time to remove The Spanner. The device reduces elevated post void residual (PVR), improves voiding symptoms, and enables voluntary urination.
In 2021, Olympus acquired partner Medi-Tate and its minimally invasive prostate device, iTind. The nitinol iTind device functions like a large stent; it helps in reshaping the channel to enhance urine flow, and is removed after five to seven days.
Allium Medical has launched several types of stents for the treatment of various types of urinary tract strictures, on the basis of anatomic location. Made of nitinol, the stents have a co-polymer coating to prevent encrustations. The unravelling feature of these Allium-made stents enables ease of removal. Some examples of such stents are given below.
Allium Bulbar Urethral Stent (BUS): A self-expandable, large-caliber, round shaped, metal urethral stent devised to treat urethral strictures. It is made of a coiled, very elastic metal alloy – nitinol – and coated with a co-polymer which prevents mucosal hyperplasia and encrustations. The insertion procedure is easy and simple to carry out under local or general anaesthesia. The device is also easy to remove.
Allium Triangular Prostatic Stent (TPS): Devised to treat prostatic obstruction due to BPH, or prostatic obstruction after thermal or irradiation treatment. It is used particularly in patients not willing or not fit to undergo a prostatic surgical procedure.
Allium Round Posterior Stent (RPS): For the treatment of bladder neck or posterior urethral contracture, primarily after prostatic surgery.
Allium Ureteral Stent (URS): Designed to treat ureteral strictures triggered by any etiology, with a wide range of stricture length.
